Former Mexican president Felipe Calderón harshly criticized the notion that Mexico would pay anything for Donald Trump's planned wall on our southern border.
“Mexican people, we are not going to pay any single cent for such a stupid wall!” Calderón told CNBC on Saturday. “And it’s going to be completely useless.”
Calderón, who served as president from 2006 to 2012, said Trump is “not [a] very well-informed man.”
“The first loser of such a policy would be the United States,” he added. “If this guy pretends that closing the borders to anywhere either for trade [or] for people is going to provide prosperity to the United State, he is completely crazy.”
This is not the first time Mexico has said it would not help pay for the Republican presidential contender's proposed wall.
Trump has said that he will seize cash remittances that illegal aliens send back to Mexico to pay for the wall. That won't work, either:
Would that even be possible? A Trump administration could erect a lot of legal, regulatory, and logistical obstacles to transferring money from the U.S. to Mexico. But those moves would enrage the banks and financial institutions that make money off the transfers, and probably spur interest in transfer methods that escape the attention and grasp of law enforcement.
Earlier this year, Mexico’s central bank released data indicating Mexicans abroad sent home $23.6 billion in 2014, almost all of it from the United States. Payments from workers abroad make up just 2 percent of Mexican GDP, but they can play a much bigger role in particular local economies. One study concluded that “the poorest rural areas” of the country derive 19.5 percent of their income from remittances. Whatever their economic impact, the payments are widespread:

Put a 15% tax on all remittances going out of the country.
The wall will be paid for in two years.
Somehow when America acted like it had more authority and power to choose, it usually didn’t have big prosperity problems.
Even Trump has that “big beautiful door” but make no mistake it is a door that does all the things doors do. People have been complaining about putative touchback but this looks like queueback.
The number one thing preventing Mexico from being a first world country with a flourishing economy is political corruption. So shut up Calderon, until you and the rest of the Mexican political hierarchy clean up your own mess. If you can’t provide opportunity for your own people, in a country with your land mass and natural resources (not to mention all the talented, industrious, and smart citizens you have), then maybe its time to clean house on your corrupt fellow politicians.
Would he rather have US troops on his border?
Trump and me : The US taxpayer won't pay 'a single cent' for Mexico's stupid rejects...
Wonderful retort.
Annual aid to Mexico is about $210 million. That’d be a decent enough down payment on the border wall, with remittance taxes of 30-50% covering the balance.
So, go f*** yourself, Calderon.
Highly unusual for a Mexican official to say a wall won’t work anyway so don’t build it. /s
Really? Last I checked, the US provides Mexico with a significant amount of foreign aid. That could always be diverted to build a wall instead.
Just eliminate foreign aid to Mexico and the wall will be paid for in a few years.
He has about as much authority in the matter as I do. I actually have more, come to think of it, as I get to vote for the prez that might enact such measures.
I say install border walls where private property adjoins to the border, and convert any federal lands along it to a military training ground.
Okay, fine, then I suggest President Trump/Cruz/Rubio/Kasish, etc. garnishee the costs from our 971 million foreign aid to Mexico. That’ll work.
Seems to work for Meh-hee-ko!
Also, if that "guy" wins, you can take your oil --- and shove it!
This is the worst of multiple words for these “rejects” anyhow. Shooed out of Mexico by overt public policy, they are not even connected to Mother Mexico but want to found their own rebel version of Mexico, here in the USA. They have one foot on a banana peel, another foot in nowhere.
We are arguably doing Mexico a favor by plugging its leaks.
multiple WORLDS
Maybe time another line was added to this:
From the Halls of Montezuma To the shores of Tripoli; We fight our countrys battles In the air, on land, and sea; First to fight for right and freedom And to keep our honor clean; We are proud to claim the title Of United States Marines
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mexico prosper BETTER with the wall, than before it. Because now it won’t be able to treat its own human capital so cynically and cheaply. “Go to the USA” is almost like “Go to hell” now. Except they get some of the devil’s money.
Greater integrity for both Mexico and USA is a win/win.
