Buckley always said he picked the most conservative candidate which he thought could win. Hence, Nixon in 1968, but he really wanted Reagan.

I don’t remember Reagan being mentioned at the 1968 convention. Weren’t George Romney and Richard Scranton contenders against Nixon back then? I thought Reagan was in the thick of running California in those years?
