I think it showed intelligence and a lot more courage than diving into the scrum and risking possible injury.
He must have know he would be criticized no end for that play, but the reality is that he is much more valuable to his team than a single fumble recovery if he is injured in the process. This is the kind of thinking that separates excellent players for good players. He has many years of leading his team to wins if he stays healthy. If he dives in and comes up with an injury he will be forever diminished.
I think the coaches liked it even if some fans didn't.
