Since early contests rely heavily on name recognition, it makes sense that Trump would get votes at bargain prices. He came into the contest with high recognition built on his decades of coverage of his multiple business bankruptcies, his extensive marital infidelities, his multiple appearances on shows like The View and Howard Stern, plus his reality television show.
In retrospect though he probably should have spent a bit more.

Thanks, I was wondering about that very thing!
Per delegate (using those numbers):
Trump: 2 million
Rubio: 3.7
Cruz: 4.5
...
Bush : 27 million
That’s total, national spending of course. Not just in Iowa.
If it kept up at this rate it would cost Bush over 33 billion just to win the nomination...
