Tariffs are simply a tax on a large group of Americans which subsidize economic benefits for another group of Americans.

Tariffs served a valuable function and propelled and transformed the USA to industrial power house up until 1913. They are part of US history and good part at that. The income tax era that Free Traitors defacto support not so much.

Tariffs subsidized some Americans - via higher prices and reduced opportunity for other Americans. The fact that some sectors of the economy were shielded by tariffs while others were not is the very definition of cronyism.

Remember the auto import quotas of the '70s? American manufacturers responded by raising prices and cutting quality. Worst cars ever built. Nothing before or after as bad.

Raise the price on Chinese appliances 45% and the result will be that locally-made appliances will go up 44%.

Don’t forget there were perpetual arguments about how much the tariff would be and what it would be on. Decade after decade of yelling and screaming back and forth about tariffs. They were fund raisers for the government, but they were also political footballs.

Do you want to go back to that?
