I’d also suggest that a lot of the angst about heroin these days only exists because many of the overdose cases involve affluent white teens.

I blame the drug issue in America on two sides, politicians and the mafia. But then, I guess that boils down to just one side if you consider they are one in the same....

Was it not the mafia that brought drugs to America some many years ago?

To some degree what you are saying is true....

However, the use of heroin is reaching epidemic proportions in many places on the east coast.... especially here on Long Island..... it crosses socioeconomic classes.... there isn't a week that goes by that we don't hear in our Church of another teenager or young adult dying from its’ use.

Last Friday my young daughter graduated from a 15 month drug and alcohol program called Teen Challenge... at the same time a friend of mine attending received a call that his 23 year old nephew was found dead from a heroin overdose.

My daughter is one of the lucky ones... a year and a half ago I sat at her bedside while she laid blind and paralyzed.... and was expected not to live... due to a heroin overdose.....

In the end we are responsible for our own choices... but the availability and dirt cheap cost of this drug only makes it more enticing to potential users....

Something needs to be done..... it is a growing problem....

I wish you and your daughter well, and I'm glad to hear that she's pulling through this.

Something needs to be done..... it is a growing problem....

No offense, but "something needs to be done" is one of the most ridiculous statements anyone can make when it comes to a situation that is ultimately in our own control. This isn't a case of marauding invaders or a landslide that is threatening to inundate a mountain village. If "something needs to be done," then do it.

Agreed, something needs to be done offers no suggestions as to what is to be done.

And I nearly lost my favorite nephew the same way. He’s had his share of drug abuse, (which got worse when his mother passed)..and was on probation, back living at home with his father. His father, an LEO, heard a thump in his bedroom, kicked down the door and found him. He was able to get EMT’s there quickly and administered Narcan. The nephew had to serve the remainder of his sentence in local prison/rhab. The heroin on the streets these days is very powerful, I have friend everywhere attending funerals of 20 something young people, from every family and income situation. I pray for your daughter and for you. It’s a lot worse than when I was that age.

Glad to hear that after many decades Teen Challenge continues to result in changed lives.

Declaring this for you and your daughter...

Mexico has already legalized drugs.

No they haven't - production and sale of drugs remain illegal in Mexico.

Two states have legalized POT; the problem is not only worse,

What "problem" - and where's the evidence that it's worse?

but gangs are buying "legal pot" and shipping it all over the country and selling it at higher prices.

Meaning that the grower profits now go to law-abiding citizens rather than criminals - a clear win.

I don't think it's even possible to legalize heroin. No legitimate company would be willing to sell it. There would be far, far too much potential for liability and negative publicity.

Makers of the potentially fatal drug alcohol have never been successfully sued and are undeterred by any negative publicity.

If there is any legalization, scientist should come up with a safe substance

What should we do about the legal but unsafe drug alcohol?

a large percentage of our murder rate represents the resolution of business disputes in the recreational pharmaceutical industry.

As was the case during alcohol Prohibition. Anyone recall how we solved that problem?

Smuggling becomes a federal crime punishable by life in prison.

That doesn't address the substantial domestic production of pot and synthetics.

Any politician who claims to care about the drug overdose deaths sweeping the nation, but does not demand that we build a wall, deport illegal aliens and end the anchor baby scam, is a liar.

All true. Gotta bring back the jobs too, though.

Poison the next captured shipment and send it on its way. Repeat as necessary.

We have to understand NONE of this is accidental. Or new ideas. See what the British did do the Chinese during the Opium War.

Our society, culture and nation has been and continues to get attacked from multiple fronts by globalists wishing to usher in the final collectivist revolution.

So you would have favored poisoning PigRigger's daughter and SueRae's favorite nephew. I can't get on board with that.

No, they would have made the CHOICE to poison themselves. Drug use is a BEHAVIOR, not a disease. Choose badly and there are consequences.

One would hope, though, that those (and most) individuals would be smart enough to leave the crap alone after the first wave of seriously ill druggies.

the first wave of seriously ill druggies.

Oh, so you want to add a seriously-ill-making component to a drug that can all by itself kill its users? And you think this will substantially increase deterrence? Weird.
