...said they were in favor of the change during an occasionally contentious Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on the forthcoming full integration of women in the military. They offered their opinions in response to a question from Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), who said that she also is in favor of the change.
"Senator, it's my personal view that, based on this lifting of restrictions... every American who's physically qualified should register for the draft," Neller said.
"Senator, I think that all eligible and qualified men and women should register for the draft," said Milley.
The comments are a first in the Defense Department. Previously, senior defense officials have said only that the issue would need to be researched following Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter's historic decision in December to open all jobs in the military to women without exception.
Carter's action allows women for the first time to apply for a variety of physically punishing positions, including Army and Marine Corps infantryman, as well as Special Operations jobs, including Navy SEAL and Green Beret. The Defense Department plans to begin implementing associated changes in training and evaluation by April 1.
The Selective Service System has existed for decades, and was created to make sure the military has enough manpower when it is short-handed in a time of war. A variation of it was first adopted in 1917, as the United States prepared to join enter World War I.
But Selective Service laws have never required women to subject themselves to the draft and face the prospect of being forced into military service. The current version of the Military Selective Service Act requires that virtually all men in the United States between the ages of 18 and 26 register, most within 30 days of turning 18. That includes non-U.S. citizens...

Women have feminism to thank for this. They wanted equality, I hope they get it.
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
The feminists are going to squeal like stuck pigs when they hear this.
Stay away from my granddaughters General.
I want my ultra leftwing spoiled brat niece in the army, yes sirree Bob. Serves those liberals right.
Don’t expect to hear a peep from the academic feminists - they’re too old to be affected and are just fine with making rules for somebody else.
That is the ticket for a society. Send your most fertile women off to die so the dead cannot be replaced.
Womens equality was never about fairness.
Why?
Are they expecting trouble?
I knew this was coming.
Long past time for women to register. There is much more to our military than just front line combat roles.
Works for me. While we’re at it, a little UMT (Universal Military Training) might go a long way to making patriotic citizens out of our little tater tots.
My daughters are not registering.
Women have DEMOCRATS to thank for this. Military draft for women is ONLY ever suggested by Leftists. Heck, they’re keen on drafting everyone they can ASAP.
I can’t decide if they’re trying to destroy support for the military by compelling military service (on the theory that support wanes when it’s your or yours’ life on the line), or are trying to establish a military-backed rule filled with supporters (an all volunteer army leans Constitutional instead).
Send them to clear the minefield under mortar fire after no shower for two weeks and cold rations for the past five days.
They asked for it.
That said, I hope they keep "researching" the issue, as opposed to actually implementing it, for the time being. God willing, the next president will reverse this nonsense about putting women in combat units, but it will a lot harder to reserve it the policy is that much more entrenched.
Women in the military should get "high and tight" haircuts.
Women in the military should shave their faces every morning.
If anybody disagrees with that, then you're a racist that hates women.
I believe in equality.
I think the Army and Marine Chiefs are saying this because the product has gotten undesirable because of the way that President Obama has treated the military. If Obama was pro-military, then numbers would be good and they would not be asking for this.
I know some are tired of the blame Obama for everything, but facts are facts....it truly is Obama’s fault.
Talk to the politicians.
