You misunderstand the term Australian ballot. It also called secret ballot, is system of voting in which voters mark their choices in privacy on uniform ballots printed and distributed by the government or designate their choices by some other secret means.

Interesting. It appears I was mis-educated on the term 30+ years ago when I first voted in the Hugo Awards, their, then new to me, system worked roughly as I described and was routinely referred to as "Australian style voting" and similar voting has been used in the several Hugo votes I've participated in since. I pegged the oddity as par for SF fandom. Now I look up the history of the term and find your use is the norm and much older. Whereas what the Hugo's do is now referred to as
"Instant Runoff Voting.
