Breckenridge was VP of the United states before the war. He ran as a Democrat for president in 1860...the election which Lincoln won thus beginning secession and ultimately the civil war. Breckenridge sided with the confederates even though his home state kentucky never left the union. He was a confederate General. I don’t believe he became secretary of war. Alexander Stevens was the vice president of the confederacy.

Well I guess I didn't get my information to wrong, I just didn't make the VP connection before the war.
