GOP front-runner Donald Trump may have played a significant role in breaking recent precedent strongly connected to President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign.
And it could catapult him to victory in Monday's Iowa caucuses.
Between January 4 and February 1, 3,651 Iowans registered as Republicans ahead of the caucuses, according to data released Monday by the Iowa secretary of state's office.
That beat the previous high-water mark of new-voter registration between the same period during the past three election cycles, which came during then-Sen. Barack Obama's 2008 campaign. That year, 3,262 voters registered as Democrats over the same timeframe.

IIRC Santorum won Iowa by 34 votes in ‘12.
Many of us will disappear if Trump or Cruz don’t win . . . and unfortunately, if Trump doesn’t win, I don’t see Cruz winning. He doesn’t realize he is being set up for the old Rubio bait and switch.
From what I read earlier, that “surge” brings the number of registered Republicans back up to about what it was in 2012.
Santorum won last time with just under 30,000 votes, so yeah, it is.
Carl Cameron mentioned that weekday rallies are tougher because people have to go to work. Wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of people took a half-day off, then had to get back to work-—or, they drove a long way (as we did for the Columbus, OH event) and needed to get back to their precinct in time to vote.
Still, has anyone counted the number of people at Trump IA rallies? If it’s close to 30,000, I’d say he wins right there.
No, it’s not.
Another indicator is long line at caucus locations.
I’d love to hear some reports on lines forming at caucus locations.
“Iâm going to have a hard time tomorrow not breaking some ribs laughing.”
Or you’re going to break your jaw eating crow.
I suggest both the Trump and the Cruz folks holding fire... This is going to be close.
Fox just said there haven’t been a big registration push. I know I know, why am I listening to Fox?
Bored and already saw the current episode of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives.
” Trump was greeted by empty seats at his latest rally. Yahoo said so.”........
You read that on the internet and you ACTUALLY BELIEVED IT?
Icy roads, dense fog, people working, and ready to go caucus.
Why does everyone talk like Trump can only win with new voters. Those weren’t all unregistered voters who went to his rallies. They were registered Republicans who took the polls.
Children! Its past your bedtime now so you will have to wait until morning to see what “Santa” will bring to each of you. Live with it until morning. It will be what it will be and the only ones who should actually be worried are those in the race and, of course, the voters in Iowa.
Lemmings jumping off a cliff.
Yeah, I’ve been hearing all day that neither side has seen large increases.
I also heard today that thousands are switching parties from democrat to republican. Also from independent to republican. I think that would be separate from new voter registrations.
There are tens of thousands of registered republicans that never caucus and many of them may be coming out.
.
Dems going GOP is the only way Trump could win.
Could also be the dims immitating Limbaugh’s “Operation Chaos”.

.
They were SEIU members that were paid to go.
They may well be registering GOP for money too.
3,651 Iowans registered as Republicans out of something over 625,000 already registered.
0.0058416 %,
The bigger impact is getting the already registered to go and caucus.
