Southeast Texans campaign for Cruz in Iowa

When Lisa Barry went knocking on doors in support of U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz's presidential campaign in Iowa, she felt two shocks to her system.

The first was the two-degree temperature outside. The second was the woman behind the first door Barry knocked on.

When the woman answered the door, she could see liquid in Barry's eyes had already frozen, so she invited the Southeast Texan into her home.

That was the experience Barry and others like her came away with, noting that while some Iowans have grown weary of presidential caucus time, many of them showed compassion for the foot soldiers.

Barry, 53, and her husband, Kenneth, drove 14 hours to campaign for Cruz.

For seven nights, Kenneth Barry slept on an air mattress, while his wife and her childhood friend squeezed into a twin-size bed.

The dorm was nothing like a five-star hotel, but they spent so much time outside the building that it hardly mattered.

Campaigners had the option of making calls in the warm conditions of a phone bank or braving the elements to go door-to-door.

"Once (the Iowans) realized you were a human being, spending time away from home for this, they were willing to listen," Lisa Barry said.

The Barrys run a security business in Port Arthur.

They put everything on hold to see if they could influence undecided voters more than 700 miles away to vote for Cruz.

Once the Iowans realized you were a human being? Why would they not?

A trucker’s joke about doors:

Q: Do you know the difference between a Freightliner and a Jehova’s Witness?

A: you can shut the door on a Jehova’s Witness.

I’m glad the people of Iowa are hospitable to the campaigners.

Iowans are supposed to be impressed by Texans traveling to Iowa on behalf of a fellow Texan/Canadian?

Me too; I just don’t think their noble sacrifice will make a difference with the kinds of voters we have.

I guess it’s good that they didn’t get so cold that they got confused and Kenneth and his wife’s childhood friend squeezed into a twin-size bed.
