I remember a Vet saying to me they had to pay Red Cross back for assistance they received. My father, a WWII vet, hated the Red Cross because he said that they charged the soldiers in the field for the donuts and coffee they brought. He would never give them a dime the rest of his life. He was in France during the war.

I had a friend tell me the same story about her father in WW!!. She always carried a grudge against the Red Cross.

A surprising number of WWII vets over the years have told me that they didn't think too highly of the Red Cross; many of them would then say something positive about the Salvation Army. I have since discovered that that a lot of WWI veterans expressed similar thoughts.
