Ted Cruz started the month riding high in Iowa. Now, he just wants to get out of the state alive.
The self-styled rock-ribbed conservative is under siege, battling attacks from his right and left flanks who say the Texas senator with tea party and evangelical credentials isn't who he claims to be.
And as Cruz appears to be falling farther behind front-runner Donald Trump, his campaign is now looking in the rear-view mirror, concerned that Marco Rubio and the rest of the GOP field are closing in.
Cruz's problems were in sharp relief at the Fox News debate in Des Moines Thursday night, where he was everyone's favorite punching bag. The consistent charge: Cruz is a fake.
"This is the lie that Ted's campaign is built on, and Rand touched upon it -- that he's the most conservative guy, and everyone else is a -- you know, everyone else is a RINO," Sen. Marco Rubio said Thursday night. "The truth is, Ted, throughout this campaign, you've been willing to say or do anything in order to get votes."
A recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll shows that Trump has overtaken Cruz by 7 points, leading 32% to 25%.
Most tellingly, both his campaign and one of his super PACs on Thursday launched new television advertisements against Rubio, a candidate they already saw on defeated.

Meanwhile, Trump is free to skip debates and constantly question Cruz's eligibility to serve as president.
"I'm glad I wasn't there 'cause I guess all of that -- he got pummeled, wow," Trump said Friday of the Fox News debate. "And you know they didn't even mention he was born in Canada."

The Last Refuge reports “CRUZ CAMPAIGN IS OFF THE RAILS “ as seven Cruz staffers are exiting and the Cruz legal staff is signing them out with legal nondisclosure forms as they go.
The consensus is that Cruz is not who he says he is. Something to that effect.
The campaign sees Rubio closing in and a disaster in last night’s debate.
For months the refrain was, “Once Trump is out of the way, Cruz will step up. He is right where he wants to be. He is sooo brilliant!”
Well, he had his shot. He impressed no one outside of his cult.
But in all honesty, Cruz does not have a path to the GOP nomination. Now if he's nominated, I'd swim across the Great Lakes to vote for him. But it's not there.
ping to 7.
I hear ya. I throw a half hearted jab at some of my own too once in a while. Fun to mix things up. See ya on the battlefield.
“Meanwhile, Trump is free to skip debates and constantly question Cruz’s eligibility to serve as president. “
The better general is the one who out manoeuvres their opponent.
And the head of Glenn Beck’s media empire quit, others to follow. Maybe he will go to work with Cruz.
It could be that Cruz is the one to implode...
Pinky and the Brain. Redux.
Yep. Cruz said once Trump was out of the way, Cruz would dominate.
Well, Trump was out of way last night and Cruz was below average.
So two die hard conservative comes out with their prospective..
Absolutely Ted wants to win in Iowa period. He sees Rubio as the threat not Trump!!! Of course I think Ted will win Iowa and Come in second New Hampshire win SC and the rest of the south...
That's what you get for bringing a Beck to a NYC street fight.
I loved Cruz for TEXAS. I loved W.
But, now I read where even W. has no use for Cruz and the Bush insiders speak to where Ted was “then”, from where Ted is “now” are two different end zones.
The problem, as they saw it, was when he saw a ride on a rising TEA Party movement and got a ticket on the TEA PARTY express, and they say that on all hard issues Cruz flipped like a switch. Immigration for one, although there is evidence piled as high as Ted measures, of his center left sympathies for illegals and his adoration for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who gave us Obamacare.
