Nothing like Donald Trump has ever hit a major American political party: A blow-dried celebrity gleefully smashing one modern Republican certainty after the other. As he defies his own party on tax orthodoxy, on healthcare and on bending a knee to Roger Ailes, he's exposed the GOP establishment as virtually powerless over its own nominating process.
His rise has now created a split so deep that it's not clear how the party is going to recover. Some conservatives are trying to crush his candidacy, others are finally embracing him, and they're all lobbing grenades at each other. So is this the end of the GOP as we know it? And what's next?
National Interest editor Jacob Heilbrunn sees Trump's disruption as just the reboot the party needs; Republican strategist Rick Wilson sees a possible "murder-suicide" between Trump and Cruz that opens the door for moderates. Former Senate operative Jim Manley sees a party civil war that will sow chaos far beyond the GOP.
Here, for Politico Magazine, 12 political gurus put their minds to the most unexpectedly urgent big-picture question in American politics.

They said they would secure the border. They did nothing. Yes, they are dead to many of us.
“But will he kill the Uniparty?”
Yeah, when will all the “conservatives” in the GOPe start switching parties and running as RATs when Trump takes office? Then we will really see the dimensions of the “Uniparty.”
Hopefully a fatal blow is coming soon. The GOPe does not deserve continuance. Let the statists join the Rats, we will take their nationalists.
As much as I disagree with him on issues, I respect Bernie Sanders for taking only small donations. His believers sincerely believe in him. Contrast that with Hillary Clinton who even D's think will sell her soul.
Candidates who choose to pursue big money donors - corporate or otherwise - will have to find a way to do that and explain it to the voters.
Do I think raising big money from corporations should be illegal? NO
Do I think it's a legitimate campaign issue? YES
“...we will take their nationalists.”
All three of them?
Nothing Trump has done or is likely to ever do will be responsible for the downfall of the Republican Party. Trump exists because of the failures of the party.
I may blame Trump for specific things in the future, but it will never be for this. And we have to reform the party on this election cycle anyway or it will fracture into two. We’re past the point of no return now. We passed it after the last election. The GOPe was just too hard headed to care or to believe that it would really happen.
Yeah, open the door for moderates. HA! I needed a good laugh to finish off my week!
You mean has he killed the Republican Wing of the Democratic Party?
The GOP killed itself.
Has Islam-Loving destroyed the Demonratic Party?
Ask that question, Politico
Not yet, inching towards destroying GOPe
"...His rise has now created a split so deep that it's not clear how the party is going to recover..."
The GOP unfortunately will survive. It’s the conservative movement that he’s killing right now.
Conservative Trump supporters are like his first wife Ivana. The sex is great, he makes them feel happy inside. And it’s already too much cognitive dissonance to see that he’s already starting having an affair with Marla (the GOP and Dem elite). After he’s secured the GOP nomination, he’ll ditch Marla until he gets elected. At that point, he’ll move on to Malania, who is simply a symbol of his glorified self.
And that will be the hallmark of the Trump presidency. He will do whatever feeds his ego. If it’s his sister on the Supreme Court, doling out federal money to secure favors later on, using women as doormats, or making everything glamorous; it will all be in service of one thing and only one thing. Donald’s ego.
If he kills the GOP you will very soon regret it
He cannot rule autocratically although I think that is what he is best suited for
Rome wasn’t built in a day... but so far so good...
Like!
The GOPe wing of the Uni[party is dead? One can hope so. These traitors-to-their-electorate and to their oaths of office should be put down.
The GOP lost the last 5 of 6 national popular votes, and could do with a shake-up.
Demographics are what they are. Many “true conservative” positions are simply not popular any more.
A new paradigm. Instead of doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results.
Take some risks. Get outside of the comfort zone. Even think outside the box.
Maybe start with something simple, like: “Make America Great Again”
not that the pub party was much but Trump has pretty much destroyed any pub’s chance of becoming president this year...
