It was a badly rehearsed joke, you dope. And an off the mark one that made Cruz look desperate.
JMHO but Cruz at times seems to wish he might pull a laugh using lines similar to our magic mulatto. Unfortunately, the MM (due to his office) gets a few chuckles; Cruz, gets flat flax. Cruz should just be what he is and allow others to be the comic in the room. Not often do his one liners, jokes work for him.
