Donald Trump will soon betray the GOP
The Week ^ | 1/28 | Paul Waldman

I say that because there's no reason to think that Trump won't turn on a dime the instant he has to face a general electorate, and begin advocating a whole new set of policies. He adopted an entirely new set of beliefs for this race, one attuned to what his current audience wants — not just xenophobic, but fervently pro-life, pro-gun, pro-God, and pro-whatever else he thinks primary voters want to hear. Trump panders shamelessly to whoever he's talking to, he has no genuine ideology, and he won't feel tied to anything he's said before, any more than he's tied to his previous positions on health care or abortion.

Unlike other politicians who struggle to explain any hint of contradiction between what they're advocating now and what they've advocated before, Trump waves it all away. Remember all the painful contortions Mitt Romney went through to convince Republicans he was in complete agreement with them and had renounced his prior hints of moderation? Trump doesn't bother with that. Who cares what I said then? This is what I'm saying now, and anyone who has a problem with it is a low-energy loser.

For Trump, this is personal.

At that stupid press/president annual dinner that is now attended by Hollywood types and other celebrities, Obama insulted Trump while Trump was in the audience. It was humiliating for Trump. He was insulted in front America’s biggest celebrities, with TV cameras rolling, and he just had to sit their and take it.

Trump will get his revenge on Obama.

What is best for Donald Trump is to spend time with Milania and his your son, buy a few more iconic locations and make them fabulous, and generally have a nice life. What Donald Trump is doing is trying to Make America Great Again.

You are correct, that is not conservative. Conservative is caving to the progressive/Communist/Muslim/media agenda. that is what being conservative means today.

Are we being scammed?

Let's analyze this. In 2000, they said they would right the ship if we just gave the R's the House, Senate & WH, so we did, for 6 years, from 2000-2006. And what did we get in return? The so-called "Patriot" Act, the beginning of "Too big to fail"/bailout policies that were continued under obunghole, Part D and so forth. So we got scammed then.

In 2010, they said if we gave them the House, they would fight obunghole tooth and nail, so we gave it to them, and ever since, they have given obunghole everything he wants for fear of being blamed for shutdowns, etc. So we got scammed.

In 2014, they said if we gave them the Senate, they would be in a better position to fight obunghole, and so we did. And ever since, they have gone out of their way to give obunghole everything he wants.

So maybe, the question should be, are we getting scammed YET AGAIN? I'll grant you, the answer may very well be yes, which makes me believe either 1. We are being scammed and need to prepare to entirely stop supporting ANYTHING the GOP says or does, with ALL candidates, or 2. We are not being scammed.

Either way, this is indeed the most important election in the history of America. We either make it happen and get America back on track, or we eschew the ballot box going forward.

What President has not been a “deal maker”? If Trumps negotiates on behalf of the country as he has for himself, then America benefits. I could care less who is left holding the bag whether it is another country or some special interest.

We’re just talking about the campaign though. I don’t believe Reagan ran on amnesty.

Trump’s fooling everybody with tough talk combined with moderate policies. Sure, your block may be filled with Mariachi music with 10 newly amnestitized immigrants returning from Mexico in each house and you may get laid off when one of them takes your job for half the wage, but at least Trump called Mexicans rapists. Hopefully that makes up for everything.

Thanks.

How optomistc you are..(or is that Pollyannaist)

To belive that a man that has changed nearly every postion he has STATED in public and that Considers “screwing” other mens wives will not do the same to YOU (politically) is almost funny.

Trump reminds me why late night info-commercials work.

If billy blanks were alive maybe trump could have him as vp.

I will still vote against hrc and the R candidate is the only one than can win.. in that ..so if a carnival barker and wheeler dealer is it I will hold my nose and pull the lever for the lesser of 2 evils.

No, it doesn't. Except in the minds of extremely bamboozled or extremely dishonest Trumpkins. Conservative means doing the opposite of what Obama and Sanders want.

Wow. I didn't realize we were allowed to bring reason and perspective into these discussions. Well, if that's the case....

Most -- not all -- of the infighting is really over tactics/strategy, not end goals. The "establishment" believes it has to try to build a majority by appealing to a broader swathe of the country, because without a majority in Congress and the Presidency, you can't pass laws. They think the anti-establishment crowd is seeking emotional catharsis rather than accomplishment.

The anti-establishment people either 1) don't trust that the establishment is really aiming for the same goal, or 2) believe that squishy moderate rhetoric never really has a chance of winning the necessary majorities.

Some truth on both sides.

But your point is well-taken, because we do need both the Presidency and actual working majorities in Congress to really being about needed change. And if we chase out every Republican who isn't a conservative, then the end result is going to be more purity, but fewer seats. And I'd rather have a Scott Brown who sides with us 75% of the time than a Democrat who is against us 90% of the time.

ObamaCare made it out of the Senate by one lousy vote. One, and every single Republican, even the squishy moderates like Oympia Snowe - voted against it. Just one more Republican in the Senate, even an ideologically impure moderate, and it wouldn't have passed.

And now, we're seeing all this hateful invective from supporters of their candidate trashing every other candidate and those who support them. Well, I got some news for people. We're going to need the votes of "moderates" within the GOP to get someone like Trump or Cruz elected.

If we don't hang together, we're all going to hang separately.

Conservatives will be left holding the bag. Especially when Trump nominates the next Souter and Kennedy to the court.

Bad analogy. Ronald Reagan nor Abraham Lincoln could have defeated Roosevelt in 1942 after Pearl Harbor.

Worst analogy. Trump is no Reagan or Lincoln, he's more Huey Long; its all about him and what ever political ideology that gets him there is the one he embraces.

The “Conservatives” in Congress have had the power to shut down Obama since 2014 when we gave them the Senate. They could have kept it shut down until Obama caved. If Donald Trump had been in charge either of the House or Senate, he would have shut things down, and, unlike Ted Cruz’s attempt, it would have stayed shut down.

This is called “walking away from a bad deal”. Look at what Donald is doing with the Debate today. That is an example of walking away from a bad deal.

Notice that I have not called you any names. I haven’t even listed the names I am not calling you. You will have to imagine those yourself. ;-)

If Trump gets to the WH, it will be a major coup. The Dems have won the popular vote in five out of the last six elections. The Dems, thanks to mass immigration and minority birthrates, are on the cusp of being the permanent majority party. If the GOP loses in 2016, the party and the country are finished.

Primarily because there was no presidential election in 1942.
