What I don’t understand is how that man manages to sound like he’s reading a teleprompter even when he isn’t.
Drives me crazy.

Some speakers can basically see their words like with a teleprompter but there is none.
Most of them come across as very robotic.
Cruz sounds that way because his principles don't depend on the audience. When you consistently tell the same story, it's easy.
Trump, on the other hand, changes his positions with the changing of the tide. That why he won't debate Cruz one-on-one. Cruz would use Trumps own words against him and somehow Trump would claim that is unfair.
