Here’s where he could go with good theology and escape the trap. He could say frankly that, as he reads the bible, this is premature and is waiting for an official personal presence of Christ, which would be absolutely unmistakable and nobody could argue with it.
BUT WILL HE?
Not if he really believes it.
This is the worst possible time to start discussing the finer points of the second coming. If Cruz got into that he'd lose another ten points. There are few subjects more divisive. Do you want the Catholic vote? The Jewish vote? The mainline Christian vote? Then keep that end times stuff - which even evangelicals can't come to any consensus about! - out of the campaign.
