Trump calls for Medicare to negotiate drug prices

Donald Trump is calling for Medicare to be able to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies to lower drug prices, a policy long backed by Democrats and opposed by Republicans.

The Republican presidential candidate told a crowd in Farmington, N.H., Monday night that the policy would save billions of dollars, but then took a shot at pharmaceutical companies, which strongly oppose the proposal.

"We don't do it. Why? Because of the drug companies," Trump said, according to The Associated Press.

Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, as well as President Obama, have called for the same policy of letting Medicare negotiate prices, which it is currently banned from doing under the 2003 Medicare prescription drug law. The Democratic candidates also have both bashed the drug companies on the stump.

You do know that Wikipedia is not a legitimate source, don’t you?
Schools have banned it from being a reliable source . . it is user generated and Wikipedia allows its users to edit the information as they wish. It has been edited 35 times more than the actual users!
They call their editing process ‘Undue Weight’ . . which means even if the majority answer that is in favor is incorrect and the minority is correct but with fewer followers, the one in favor wins.

When I asked a rep I was told that Americans are better able to pay more so that research continues. Unfortunately this Glaxo was also giving clocks, wooden picture frames and expensive pens to everyone in the office.

The Neocons were former Democrats, as was Reagan, and as such were in opposition with the Old Right, the New Right, the Libertarians.
Reagan favored the Neocons and their form of a somewhat ‘new’ Conservatism that rose out of their departure from the Democrat Party, much like Reagan’s own departure. Irving Kristol, Bill Kristol’s father, was part of the Liberals-turned-Conservative, as was Bill Bennett.
Donald Trump is being critiqued in much the same manner as Reagan was. But Reagan didn’t let it deter him from his plan to make America great again.
Reagan courted the Neocons during his 1980 Presidential campaign . . and subsequently recruited many of them into his administration.
When anyone applauds the Presidency of Ronald Reagan and yet degrades Trump for being ‘too liberal’ . . perhaps they should read the real story behind Reagan’s campaign and administration and see for themselves how Trump closely resembles Ronald Reagan.

Oh boy.....ok, where do you think the program distributes it funds to? The fraud occurs at the state level - each state submits it's receipts through the program for distribution, reimbursement and acceptance.

And the reason why the private sector can sell drugs at a much lower price than a gov’t run program is.......wait for it......FRAUD.

Simple example. Prior to 2008 college tuition, albeit high, was somewhat reasonable depending on the school. Ever since the gov’t took over the loan program, tuition has skyrocketed. Know why? Because there's no accountability for the program. The schools know they can charge whatever they want because the gov’t is going to issue the loan and we can all worry about paying it back later, if ever.

Same thing with Medicare. The drug companies can charge what they want because the gov’t will pay the bill and we'll all worry about it later, if ever.

Lowering the cost of some drugs is not going to fix the program. It's entirely broken. As a Trump supporter you should be screaming for him to tell you he's going to kill the fraud and then phase it out. Instead you applaud him as he parrots Hillary and Bernie.

But.....alas I will vote for him if he gets the nod. Just not during the primaries where independent thought still exists.

Donald Trump is being critiqued in much the same manner as Reagan was.

Only two criticisms of Reagan at your link - and only one of them is from the right - and it falls miles short of your claim that "hard-nosed Conservatives accused [Reagan] of having a Democrat agenda when he was running for Prez" and of the multifaceted conservative criticisms of Trup.

"Kristol thought the Reagan administration was too harsh on the welfare state. Leading the most avid cold warriors, Podhoretz denied that the Soviet Union was becoming more democratic in the late 1980s and chided Reagan for pursuing detente in fact if not in name."

see for themselves how Trump closely resembles Ronald Reagan.

Read your latest link - as usual, it doesn't support your claim.

I’ve read that close to 40% of Medicare payouts are fraud. Start shooting the ones who defraud the system and soon there won’t be any fraud.

Your confusing Medicare and Medicaid.

I can have my Medicare part-D script filled in any pharmacy in any state. The state’s not on the hook and has no control over it. The only fraud would be people who pretended to be disabled to get on SS and Medicare but that’s another topic.

Medicaid is quite different and is handled through the state and there is a lot of fraud there.

So the states have no recourse into the program? I understood it as the Feds pay part as primary and the state has it’s own program to cover the rest. At least in NY and NJ that what I think it is and both a fraught with fraud.

Here's my understanding of how it works. If another Freeper has more accurate knowledge of this, please correct me.

Canadian Health System Bureaucrat (CHSB) That's a nice cardiac drug you have there.

Drug Company Officer(DCO) Thanks. We're very proud. 10 years of hard work and $800 million to bring it to market

(CHSB)$20 per pill seems a bit high, I heard the ingredients only cost you $1

(DCO)That's true, but the other $19 helps pay for the huge investment we made.

(CHSB)We'll give you $2 a pill.

(DCO)Excuse me? The 2 previous attempts failed, and they cost another $500 million.

(CHSB)$2.

(DCO)No thanks.

(CHSB)Then we'll let our generic manufacturer copy it and you'll get nothing.

(DCO)We'll "allow" you to rape us, but can you agree not to export the pills you've stolen from us you've so cleverly negotiated for? We need to recoup our investment somehow.

(CHSB)Okay.

Fade to black

If you insist on getting your meds for the $2 Canadian price, I guess you'll save some money. Hopefully every drug you'll ever need has already been discovered.

Never got a reply, eh?

No one takes issue with your scenario because that's exactly how it works. The drugs for people, not for profit crowd won't tell you that this is what they want, but we know it to be true.

It is easier to blame the greedy drug company than the greedy foreign government. Reality be damned.
