Ted Cruz Tells Reporters "I'm a Christian First, American Second"
Yahoo News ^ | 25 Jan 2016 | Tom McKay

According to presidential candidate and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, there's one thing that more important to him than the country he's running to lead: his God.

In a remarkable exchange in New Hampshire, Politico reports, Cruz told reporters "I'm a Christian first, American second, conservative third and Republican fourth."

"I'll tell ya, there are a whole lot of people in this country that feel exactly the same way," he added.

Cruz, currently ranked second in GOP candidate polls according to RealClearPolitics, enjoys wide support among evangelical Christians in important, early-voting primary states like Iowa, where Cruz is locked in a tight race with current frontrunner Donald Trump. Cruz repeatedly accused Trump and his support of "more deal-making" and enjoying the support of unpopular "establishment" Republicans.

By proclaiming himself a Christian first and an American second, Cruz is professing higher loyalties than the United States — odd for a candidate who has repeatedly accused Muslims of doing much the same thing.

Muslims say I am a Muslim first an American second and he says that’s wrong?

Unlike Islam, Christianity isn't incompatible with being American. And there may be a time, if Muslims take over the government, that Christians will have to decide whether the government is legitimate.

If you’re as conservative as there can be, we’re all in trouble. Fortunately I don’t believe you for one second.

So he puts his ideology and party before his family.

Lovely.

"this is controversial? a Christian’s first loyalty is to our heavenly King, not Caesar"....

This is what is really shocking to me lately.... Every believer here should be able to at least say a hearty AMEN to this statement... but they stone him.... wow!!!

My Rep. is Justin Amash, so I’m lucky that I can and will happily vote for him again.

Part of being a Christian is putting your family first and I’m sure you know it.

Maybe a little walk down our Founding Father’s Lane would help before you make such a rash statement...

I think he’s going after the remaining 5-8% that are still sticking with Carson. Once he inevitably drops out, they’ll have to go somewhere. Assuming Ted doesn’t turn off more people than he draws in with comments like this, it’s not a terrible strategy. But I do think he could have probably worded it a little bit better, to save himself from a pounding headache later on in the campaign when he’s labeled an extremist.

Cruz and the donors have dismissed that as nonsense. His campaign cites as evidence Cruzs desire to end handouts to all parts of the energy industry.

Lol, so, Cruz has also come out against the oil depletion allowance?

What was the actual question posed to Cruz, that garnered this response? I didn’t see it mentioned in the article.

Is it your contention that there is some sort of problem with a practicing Christian as president?

If Kennedy had said it he would have been history!

A Christian who tells rich Gays one thing in private to get money and tells Christians something else in public to get their votes.

Cruz is against same sex marriage, not for throwing gays off buildings. There's a difference. Gay conservatives will support someone who's against same sex marriage, because not all gays think same sex marriage is some kind of holy sacrament for homosexuals.

Meh, the puritans where voluntary communalists, not socialists. Socialism hadn’t even been conceived at that time.

Remarkable? Well, I suppose it is to atheists. But it's Christianity 101. I mean, if there is a God, what comes before Him?

And if there isn't a God, anything goes.

I'm looking forward to Trump's tweets regarding this matter.

“Unlike Islam, Christianity isn’t incompatible with being American. And there may be a time, if Muslims take over the government, that Christians will have to decide whether the government is legitimate. “

Incompatible? Yes!

Illegal? Sadly No.

So can a Muslim women that wants a ID photo wearing the Burka say “I’m a Muslim first, American second”? Do you see where a statement like this will launch a freaking crap storm?

Cruz just put the nationality of the country he is running to be president of behind his religion. If he is the nominee or actually president, this is going to bite us all in the rear.

“Wouldn’t it be better to keep things like that to yourself!”

Keep the fact that you are a Christian to yourself?!?

What, are we back in Nero’s Rome now?
