Any of the Republican candidates will face a hostile press. Most of them are capable of responding with some grace and tact. Trump isn't. Trump's supporters think this doesn't matter. But it does. The Democrats still have their 47 percent, and Trump's negatives among persuadable uncommitted voters are extremely high. Yes, many people are angry. But anger needs to be tempered and disciplined, and subordinated to a coherent critique and strategy. Trump is just angry, and he charges reflexively that all our problems exist simply because our leaders are stupid and make stupid deals. That in itself is a remarkable demonstration of ignorance. Coupled with unfocused anger, it is a dangerous combination.
I would vote for Trump in the general if he is the nominee, but we have some better choices this year.
