I was watching a very angry conservative on TV the other day attempt to paint Trump as Satan's blonde-headed younger brother.
They also tried to make out anyone who claimed to be a conservative, that would ever remotely even consider voting for The Donald, to be the dumbest SOB on the planet... the bane of humanity.
This person was angry, peeps. It was scary, shark-eyed, weirdness. They were sold on Trump being evil incarnate.
The weird thing was, if my memory serves me correctly, I don't remember this talking head getting that irate about Romney in 2012. Matter of fact, I believe they stumped arduously for Mitt going into the general election.
Y'all help me here: aside from the color of their coifs, please thrill me with what's the big difference between the twain other than Trump's way more aggressive against Islam, for more stringent border security and way more anti-Obama/Hillary than Mitt ever was. Also, Iâm pretty certain said person also tried to sell us on McCain and they were very pro-George W. Bush. Go figure. Anyway …
The disturbing thing to moi was the rage combined with the unwavering conviction that they were right on every issue and, if you disagree with them, I guarantee they'd spew more f-bombs in your face than Gary Oldman would if he ran out of espresso and cigarettes.
This made me reminisce back to a group that existed a few years ago who "knew" they were "right" on every issue.
This group was extremely conservative, pro-life, and pro-Ten Commandments. Regarding their religious practices …holy moly…they were extremely devout. So devout that they make me look like a lush with my penchant for my amazing cigar line, dirty martinis and warrior movies.
This crew tithed a tenth of every thing they made, fasted once week out of every month, and memorized the Bible. Indeed, these people hated evil and had a zero tolerance policy for any religious or political leader who showed one scintilla of compromise with their âworldviewâ. They were right, dammit. And God help you if you every drew their ire.
One man, who was also earnest and pretty conservative, but approached things way differently than they did, decided to take them on, and not only did they verbally blast him but they ended up killing him. The man they killed was named Jesus and the conservative group that had him offed was the first-century Pharisees. Yep, JC could not live up to their standards as a leader.
Speaking of standards for leaders, I wonder if those conservatives who're currently crapping on Trump, whoâre looking for the perfect leader, would back the following leaders that God did? Check it out…
-- King David shagged Bathsheba (another man's wife) and then had her husband offed. Would conservatives vote for him?
-- What about Moses? Moses killed a man, married a black woman, and had massive anger issues. Can you say "deal breaker" for most conservatives?
-- What if Samson were on the ticket? Samson dated a hooker, killed Cecil The Lion, and had long hair. Can you imagine the melee that would ensue should some candidate have this Nazarite's track record? OMG. Scandal aplenty for the fastidious among us. But…he was God's choice and his Judge to lead an ancient Israel for a time.
-- What about Abraham? This old patriarch constantly lied about being married to his wife. Not. Very. Presidential.
Then you have Jesus' fab twelve whom he chose to change the planet that were an amalgam of rough-cussing fishermen who resembled the crew of Deadliest Catch. And don't even get me started on John The Baptist, who ate bugs and wore a camel skin.
And the list could go on and on regarding the massive and weird incongruities of eccentric men who were utilized to shake and shape nations for righteous purposes.
Bottom line: good luck finding Mr., Ms., Miss or Mrs. Perfect when voting for president. And by your standards you might as well start practicing saying President Hillary Rodham Clinton.
One more thing: I will vote for either Trump or Cruz depending upon who gets the nod. Also, and pardon my redundancy, but don't forget the wizards at the National Review told us Romney & Ryan were groovy. How'd that work out for them?
That is not what I meant by Indirect Comparison. Neither Donald Trump nor Ted Cruz is a King David, Samson, or Moses. The author is not saying that Trump is. The comparison is indirect as all have done things during their lives that were considered to be non-conservative.
Sorry, I’m not God, so I wouldn’t know who He would pick.
Well, we know He has a great relationship with Donald Trump...
Pardon me, it’s a crime to be a conservative....even on THIS forum.
Immigration controls ( not stopping it and not permanently expelling people willing to retroactively apply legally to come here and work)
Restoring sanity to our economy and structuring it to grow
Respecting the religious beliefs of individual Americans instead of running an executive branch that is hostile to Christianity and preferential to islam
Respect for the power of our miitary and economic rivals ( Russia and China) but dealing with them to uphold American interests as primary - not alternately name calling, ignoring, snubbing Russia and bowing and scraping to China
True compassion and respect for the military including veterans
Roping congress including the democrats and the private sector into working together not to enrich a lobby but in restoring affordable personalized healthcare choices
If that is all we get from Trump’s first 4 years and which seems eminently likely, then hallelujah
Note that the terms “ conservatism” “ abortion” “ war against Russia/ SYRIA/ Iran” and “deportation “ are missing from the above list
Call me a common sense sellout from “conservatism “ which has become just as loony as the left and just as destructive to our national fabric
It’s apparently a crime to be a conservative and like Donald Trump as well.
And by the way there is not a democrat I can think of who can or will accomplish any of those goals
Trump said in an interview during the summer of 2015 that he is for affirmative action.
I think his position on affirmative action goes all the way back to the 70's when his company was sued by the Fed for housing discrimination. He settled without conviction, and the agreement included his company having to use quotas.
When I came out of college in '80, all the entry level jobs in my field were advertised to be for "minorities only". I showed up at a few of those intervies and they kicked me out.
I despise affirmative action.
I am stunned that we could have a pro affirmative action president on our side.
DONALD TRUMP:
I'm fine with affirmative action. I mean, I think --
CHUCK TODD:
Should it be expanded? Or should it --
DONALD TRUMP:
-- we've been having --
CHUCK TODD:
-- be limited?
DONALD TRUMP:
Well, you know, you have to also go free market. You have to go capability. You have to do a lot of things. But I'm fine with affirmative action. We've lived with it for a long time. And I lived with it for a long time. And I've had great relationships with lots of people. So I'm fine with it.
We agree with those stances...completely.
But those stances are antithetical to everything else he’s ever done in the other 69 years of his life....so we just cannot believe in his conversion. We think it is nothing more than a calculated decision to sucker in the rubes (and seriously, no offense intended there).
{Donât jettison the good for the perfect}
We’re not. We’re jettisoning the maybe good, maybe bad, maybe downright awful....for the best.
That’s not really true, you need to remove the blinders of bitterness and come to grips with the actual history of his campaign.
Kindly take a deep breath, step back from the keyboard and rethink the hyperbole.
That would be the smart thing to do.
We need someone who will win or we won’t have a Republic left.
I don’t think anyone has said the NR is not “conservative” enough. What folks have been saying is that they are insincere and ineffectual.
If they were really worried about conservatism they would not have supported some of the folks they did - which makes them insincere. Personally I think they see trump as one they won’t be able to play ball with.
I hear ya. I lived thru that too. The GOPe wonders why there is no loyalty among the Republican ranks . Well for me anyway it was the way the Republicans stood by and watched 30 years of reverse discrimination go down and DID NOTHING. They were afraid of being called racists. What a crock.
To me, H-1b is the same thing all over again and is the reason why I don't trust Cruz.
I am a burn all down type. It is all rotten from the head down.
Trump may be messed up on AA but he is not making that an issue, so he becomes the grenade we can use to frag the GOPe.
Doubtful. Possible, but doubtful.
It’s also possible that your candidate could become a disaster if he won. But that’s doubtful too.
I don't believe you'd know conservatism if it introduced itself.
Your Holiness, care to give us a quick definition of what it is?
Bet you can't, Your Holiness.
The Establishment is under the false impression that Trump is a one off phenomenon. He’s not, the suppressed pent up Nationalism/Patriotism is coming out now in a massive way. Other candidates are going to come forward now with a pro America anti gloBULList stance. This is just the beginning.
No bitterness FRiend. I have been following his campaign all along. Even his more ardent supporters concede that he’s probably not that conservative. On many issues of critical importance he’s not only flipped and flopped but has had a different view as recently as the last few months. This threads comments have listed a few.
His most important draw to many of his supporters is immigration (an issue that is as important as SC nominees). However depending on which month it is, his proposals are either touchback amnesty or deport them all. Touchback is a non starter, fail, don’t pass go, don’t collect $200. Deport them all has exactly zero chance of ever happening. As soon as the media starts running images and videos of 6y.o’s being rounded up by men with guns (think Elian Gonzalez) that approach is over. So neither of his approaches, again depending on which one he’s advocating today, have any chance or merit).
You’ve got to secure the border. Hammer employers (like Donald Trump) with substantive fines and take away all of the illegals free goodies. It’s the only solution that has ANY chance of being enacted and succeeding. Oddly enough it’s also Cruz’ plan.

Before you pull the trigger on Trump, you might want to look into how the Smoot-Hawley tariffs reduced American imports and exports by 66% and caused unemployment to skyrocket. It’s all right there on the internet.
Our economy is in a worse condition than it was in 1930.
The author of The Tanya, R. Schneur Zalman Of Liadi, wrote that few people are either tzaddik or rasha. The Hebrew terms refer to the righteous and wicked person respectively, when put into English.
Where does that leave the bulk of mankind? Zalman wrote most of us fall into the benoni, the person who is neither zealous for God nor impulsively evil. That's probably nearly every one we know.
In a word, human nature abhors the extremes. None of us is perfect and even when we love God, we are aware we fall short of attaining sainthood. We labor in the vineyards of God, but few of us will become a tzaddik.
The New Testament says, many will be called, but few will enter the kingdom of heaven. Behind it is the basic idea is that God loves as you are and if you live a decent life and have faith, that already means you're better than all the wicked people who have ever lived.
What does this have to do with people running for political office? I'm not expecting any one to be virtuous, to be more than they are. Don't hold a human being up to an impossible standard. When you vote, do expect that person to fear God, do what is right and love their country and their fellow man.
This is the standard I expect a President to meet and its a rule that is well with the human capacity to fulfill. I have a realistic expectation and given the fallen state of the world, we should do all we can to be worthy of God even if we will never become a tzaddik in our lifetime.
Somewhat inexplicable, but certainly not a crimw.
