Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump got a boost for his campaign Saturday when Sen. Chuck Grassley appeared at a a rally here for the billionaire businessman.
Mr. Grassley, who is easily one of the most popular Republican politicians in Iowa, had previously distanced himself from Mr. Trump, including publicly opposing his plan to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the United States.
In a speech, Mr. Grassley stopped short of endorsing Mr. Trump. Instead he called for Trump supporters to keep up the energy they showed at rallies throughout the state and turn out to caucus for Republicans on Feb. 1.
He came as close as possible to giving Mr. Trump a Grassley stamp of approval, including using Mr. Trump's campaign slogan.
"We have an opportunity again to make america great again," Mr. Grassley told the crowd filling an auditorium at Central College.
"I'm excited to see the big crowds because of the big energy that comes with it," he said. "And that's what it is going to take for us to win back the White House in November."
He said that he was invited by Mr. Trump to attend the rally and that he appreciated having Mr. Trump's support.
Still, Mr. Gassley chose to attended the rally at Central College while Mr. Trump's chief rival for the nomination, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, campaigned elsewhere in the Hawkeye State.
"We need you. The energy that's shown here has to be repeated every day between now and the election. Go to the caucuses and show America that Iowa voters matter," said Mr. Grassley.

Did you see the standing ovation after Trump’s afternoon speech?
Did you hear his sweet humble expression after talking to the lady who wanted him to soften his approach.
And he’s staying overnight in Iowa......and going to church there tomorrow!
He is endearing!

the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them:
“he refuses to face reality” [more]
synonyms: the real world, real life, actuality truth [more]
I missed it. Will he go to church with her?
Do you believe ethanol subsidies are something conservatives should support?
Guess Chuck realized Cruz had the personality of a flounder and will have a difficult time building a winning coalition in the general

Just left a great event in Pella. Going to church tomorrow in Muscatine, Iowa.
Oh.....I don’t think so.....I think she was from his speech this morning in Souix Center, Iowa
He said the Evangelicals had been very suportive of him and he was going to church there tomorrow.....
Thanks much. Was traveling today and missed it/them ;-)
The Cruzers I assume are Christians as well for the most part but at the same they spew hate of the worst kind towards Trump. How does hate reconcile with Christianity?
I thought Trump’s appeal was he was going to lay waste to the establishment. If being against them is his strong suit, why is he so excited when they join up with him?
Wow, first Bob Dole, now Chuck Grassley.
I hear Gerald Ford’s corpse is showing up for a rally tomorrow.
Hank
Exactly. Doesn’t make any sense, if so, does it?
But his inclusion of "make America great again" can't be ignored entirely.
I predicted that sooner or later the Washington gang would want a taste of those crowds Trump is getting.
I've got nothing against the Senator. I hope he had a nice time at the rally.
Trump and his supporters slime Cruz with Birther crap.
Trump and his supporters slime Cruz about paperwork errors on campaign loans.
Trump calls Cruz a "nasty guy" who "nobody likes" and his supporters cheer him on.
Trump supporters slime Cruz because they don't like HIS WIFE'S EMPLOYER.
And Cruz supporters are nasty.
As Sarah "I-can-see-Russia-from-Alaska" Palin might say....
YOU BETCHA!
Hank
I hear Gerald Ford’s corpse is showing up for a rally tomorrow.
Hey, be nice!! Those folks showing up to CRuz gatherings aren’t dead. They’re just napping ;-)
I'm possessed by the devil.
If you thought this was the normal tug and pull and fight for political supremacy, you were wrong. If you thought for an instant that there have been hard-fought primary battles before, and this will soon pass... you were wrong.
I'm evil. This is Biblical. I don't care one whit about America, and that's why I'm not for your guy. My secret plan is to get Hillary or Bloomberg elected.
I just see Grassley in lockstep with McConnell.
My recollection is that he ducked behind Mitch’s skirts when Cruz needed support for his filibuster.
He supports the ethanol subsidy - which is bad policy: Burn our food for fuel.
Trump didn’t start any of it. Trump was attacked from the second he ended his announcement speech on 6/16/2015. Attacked from every direction, Dems and GOP, media 24/7 to current day. It’s not a secret.
Did folks expect Trump to just bend over? Are his supporters just supposed to stand silent in the face of endless attempts from every direction to undermine Trump? Come on.
That puny little list ya put out is nothing. The list of totally unprovoked vicious malicious attacks, including death threats on Trump would go on for pages. Even Limbaugh admitted it.
How nice !
I’m glad to see that Grassley understands just HOW enthused and how many Trump supporters are.
