Donald Trump and some mainstream Republicans are engaged in a long-distance flirtation. Both sides are coming to the realization that they'll need each other if the billionaire businessman becomes the party's presidential nominee.
The GOP establishment is no fonder of Trump than when he first roiled the campaign last summer with his controversial comments about immigrants and women. But with voting beginning in just over a week, his durability atop preference polls has pushed some donors, strategists and party elders to grudgingly accept the prospect of his winning the nomination.
"We'd better stop hoping for something else and accept the possibility that he's our nominee and be prepared to rally around him if that's the case," said Fred Malek, a top Republican presidential fundraiser.
Bob Dole, the 1996 Republican nominee who represented Kansas in the House and Senate for decades, said of Trump: "He's got this personality where I do believe he could work with Congress."
Trump, too, has started to suggest that he'd look for ways to work with Republican leaders if he wins.
"I'm a dealmaker who will get things done," he said Thursday during an event in Las Vegas. "There's a point at which â let's get to be a little establishment. We got to get things done, folks, OK?"
However, the establishment's growing acceptance of Trump's electoral prospects so far hasn't manifested itself in tangible support for his campaign. The real estate mogul has not been endorsed by any congressional lawmakers or governors, nor are there any indications of a big wave of major donors planning to get involved with his campaign, despite Trump's assertion that he's received "so many calls" from wealthy and influential Republicans.

I wouldn’t trust any of them.
And what he wants this time is to Make America Great Again.
That's his legacy.
Don’t give a darn if they except him, they just better not pull any convention crap that prevents the rightfully nominated candidate from being the Party’s Presidential candidate in the general. Looks like Trump, life can not always go according to plan. I’m okay with Cruz as nominee as well.
Woe to the political elites if they rig it for a uniparty member!
If he wins Iowa, he will run the entire Republican table. Every state.
The ‘ESTABLISHMENT’ are political animals. They have dealt (surrendered) to Obama, they know they will have to deal with TRUMP. Period.
Accept. Apologies grammar police!
Perhaps they will rollover and show their soft underbellies to him as well! ;-)
Today he was introduced by Robert Jeffress and Chuck Grassley in Iowa. That's about as good as one can do.
An error every now and again shows you to be up to date and with the times.
He’s one of them and they know it.
Trump is WAY off the charts for the GOPe.
The GOPe is Bush, Rubio, Christie, Romney, Graham, McCain, Ryan, McConnell.
Trump is an alien to that crowd and you know it.
They have seen the real numbers.
They have seen the light.
There is a time to argue one’s position, even fight for it. And a time to watch what the electorate do, objectively, from a historical perspective, and learn.
;-) Thanks!
The establishment and the Ruling Class has concluded that they can better influence Trump to keep their Fascist gravy train going rather than someone with an actual record of thwarting and fighting their efforts whom they know they cannot influence at all.
I mean, if Trump can call for higher Ethanol mandates in our gas with higher subsidies, openly said he supports SINGLE PAYER UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE after abolishing ObamaCare (which is what ObamaCare’s entire purpose exists for), why wouldn’t the GOP Establishment think they can better deal with Trump than Cruz?
controversial comments about immigrants....I’m pretty sure the comments were about ILLEGAL immigrants.
This reminds me of when Dole and Clinton stood side by side and praised NAFTA. I thought “If both of these guys are for it, it can’t be good for the country.”
Leopards never change their spots. And chameleons are ever changing and are seldom found. They know how much they are despised, what better way to pop the balloon than to plead innocent and stand by our man. This would knock him out of the saddle for WTP. This is the their latest tactic considered to be the one to bring the man down - leaving an unpleasant taste in the mouths of their base. Now, they only hope to see a stampede being driven away from Trump and towards who, exactly? Tom, Dick, Harry? Who could they possibly find to generate this much excitement? Is the RNC really that degenerate? Yes, do believe they are - perhaps not entirely but there are some who don’t play by ‘rules’ They are not to be trusted - period. If they were to play fair why not contact FOX NEWS and dis-invite them from their next debate (as they have recently done with NBC) Tell Fox that due to the moderators on the panel (Megyn Kelly) they, unfortunately, will have to withdraw. Perhaps there are those of us who might actually take them seriously...until then, we’re not speaking - WE ARE TILL ANGRY! Mississippi, Trump. Strike three and you are OUT!
