Interesting post. I think it’s ridiculous to name these snow storms as well. Everything is sensationalized or perhaps the NWS is naming all storms that meet a criteria as a reference.

I think it’s mostly the latter. “Descriptive” names tend to get unwieldy and can be confused. For example, we had two big (for our area) snows a couple weeks apart last year, that could be easily confused. If one just calls a storm some code characters, that’s even less memorable. However, people tend to better remember first names of people. Katrina, for example.
