Reports: America and Russia setting up bases in Syrian Kurdistan
By Rudaw 6 hours ago
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region â Following reports that Russian engineers and soldiers had moved to the international Kamishly airport in Qamishli to possibly transform it into a base, similar reports indicate that the Americans may be seeking to do the very same thing in the region.
In the nearby Hasakah Province the Americans have reportedly taken control of the former Syrian military Rmeilan airfield. They are apparently seeking to use it as a hub to give closer support to Kurdish Peoples Protection Units (YPG) fighters in Syria engaged against the Islamic State (ISIS).
Like Kamishly airport it is very close to Syria's northeastern border with Turkey.
"Under a deal with the YPG, the US was given control of the airport. The purpose of this deal is to back up the SDF [Syrian Democratic Forces], by providing weapons and an airbase for US warplanes," an activist for the SDF told the Al Jazeera network on Tuesday.
"This airport was previously controlled by the YPG for over two years now. This strategic airport is close to several oil bases - one of the biggest in this area. Rmeilan airport was previously used for agricultural purposes by the Syrian government," he went on to explain.
While Rmeilan sits in territory controlled by the Kurds Qamishli airport remains in the few enclaves controlled by the regime in that part of Syria.
Russia and US setting up shop in that part of Syria is a highly notable development in the Syrian conflict.
To this date the US and Russians have been operating in mostly separate parts of the country. US air power has been focused solely on bombing ISIS in the east and northeast while Russian air power has been bombing various forces fighting the regime of President Bashar al-Assad across Syria.
President Trump will make the deal: Kurdistan starts with Syria. Next is Iran and Iraq. I’m sure they all equally hate us both so we might as well work together. Why waste our own bullets when the moozlums can use their own?
Then there’s Turkey.
They there is the Gulf States.
Russia got the better airfield, and it’s right up by the Turkish border.
Russia has 3 to 4 now it seems.
Let me pull out the tinfoil for sec. Somebody (elsewhere) claimed famous lefty Seymour Hersh’s new book will claim that in 2013, The U.S. military sent some members to meet with Russians to avoid WWIII over Syria.
So, given that it’s Hersh and sounds quite tinfoil, who else has heard this thing?
I’d never quite heard this but supposedly SH is about to make this claim.
First I am hearing about it.
What could go right? “They are apparently seeking to use it as a hub to give closer support to Kurdish Peoples Protection Units (YPG) fighters” ................ Sounds like they’ll both support the best side. Maybe the Russkies and the Yanks will act as a combined force and eventually, as a bi-product, stop the flow of immigration from the region. Putin may still end up being the savior of Europe in spite of all the bad press he receives. (Gotta remember, the Russians inside Russia are for Putin, those outside of Russia are against him.) So long as he doesn’t move to occupy eastern or western Europe, he may end up being the best friend they have. Close coordination and assigned areas of operation should not hamper either side.
OK, I just searched and found this link. Not validating it, just never heard this before yesterday.
Seymour Hersh Bombshell: US Military Shared Intelligence With Assad In Defiance Of Obama, CIA
Thanks for the link. The validation is much appreciated. Your mention was the first I heard of this.
The west came so close to ousting Assad and putting in al-Qaeda jihadis in Syria if not for Putin. The world is upside down.
Now those Turkish troops Estrogen sent into northern Syria will have to go through ours to get to the Russians ... should be fun.
Not over there, they don’t. They started with Latakia on the coast, then went to Homs, due north of Damascus even with where the Lebanese border turns from North to West. Both are way over on the west side of Syria. This is on the other side of the country.
Nope, the Russians are between the Americans and the terrorist corridor into Turkey from Syria. Then, behind the Russians and in front of the Americans, you have the Kurds providing additional protection.
Where are the others?
There is the Latakia port the original one and the Russians opened one more inland.
That would be the two I referenced. You indicated that there were one or two others that I had missed. Those were the ones I was asking about.
We need to REINVADE IRAQ, restore order, and HOLD THE SUMBICH THIS TIME.. AND “TAKE THE OIL”!!!! The malaise years of 0dunga shall be reversed with America’s resurgence as the world’s superpower. And then I woke up.
