I knew about Derbyshire because I was still going to NR at that time. I had read the article in question and thought it just a parody of something a black LA Times reporter had written about the "talk" she gave to her son. Well, NR immediately fired him, pretty sure the LA Times kept the fellow who wrote a very offensive article basically saying that minority (black) kids have to be warned about those evil white folks.
Anyway, I stopped going to NR immediately, and we did not renew our subscription to NR magazine. Haven't returned since.
I was not aware, however, that Mark Steyn had gotten the same treatment. What did he write that got him booted?
I knew Styen (not Stein as I originally misprinted) had pretty much stopped writing for NR at the end of 2014. I believe it was a string of his articles that finally led to his departure-——https://occamsrazormag.wordpress.com/2014/01/13/has-mark-steyn-thrown-national-review-under-the-bus/
He got too big for NR at the same time he wised up to NR being a bourgeois drinking club. Seriously. That's all there was to it.
