Sadly if you discuss public school with your friends that have children in school they likely will agree with you that public schools are a mess, then they will follow up with the refrain, "but the school my kids go to is great."
This is not unlike their congressman, they will likely gladly discuss the corrupt congress and then tell you, "but my congressman is pretty good." Election results seem to confirm this phenomenon since there is about a 90% re-election rate.
