Republican primary front-runner Donald Trump late Wednesday pinned blame for his scriptural gaffe - saying "Two Corinthians" instead of "Second Corinthians" - on evangelical activist Tony Perkins.
"Tony Perkins wrote that out for me - he actually wrote out the 2, he wrote out the number 2 Corinthians," Trump said on "CNN Tonight with Don Lemon." "I took exactly what Tony said, and I said, 'Well, Tony has to know better than anybody.'"
The slip-up drew laughs from the crowd at evangelical Liberty University and has called into question the religiosity of the billionaire businessman.
But Trump said he has since heard from "a lot of people" who tell him that he was actually correct.
"It's a very small deal, but a lot of people in different sections of the world say 'two,' and I've had many, many people say to me," he said.
"My mother, as you know, was from Scotland, and they say two," he added.
It’s not that he came off as ignorant, which he did, but that using scripture in this case was just pandering to Christians, which is OK too. Just own up.
He has huge numbers in the polls and doesn’t need to pander to Christians at all as his only rival has serious eligibility problems that are yet not resolved. He can be pro abortion, pro homosexual, pro whatever is not conservative, as long as he’s gonna build the wall and stop muslims from entering the country without proper vetting. “He’s gonna get things done” and that’s all that matters to his supporters.
Hope and change.
And it looks like I’ll be holding my nose and voting for him vs. Broom Hillary/Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders. He’ll win, and when it comes time to name appointees to the SCOTUS, we’ll be done.
I assumed that one of his advertising team came up with the ‘2’ line based on reading Cliff's notes on the Bible.
But him blaming it on Perkin's is pretty funny. Pure Trump (obviously Perkins is out of a job now, just like Cruz)
One rally Trump held a Bible in his hand like he knew what was in it it.
Right. You don’t want to admit that you are late to the Cruz ship and that, in fact, you supported another candidate over Cruz originally and were apparently leery of him even after Walker imploded. Why didn’t you support your senator originally? It’s a fair question given your constant attacks on Trump.
Perhaps "internal polls" told him he was losing to Cruz in Iowa so he had to do the "Canadian" thing and then try to pull those voters over to his column with the Liberty pitch.
Yes. Well. Twinkie fails a lot of times in life. Twinkie
blames photus. :O)
It’s very simple miss m., I liked Scott Walker back in 2011 and would have been thrilled if he’d run (or been a VP pick).
I was sorry to see him leave the race; he has the ideology and the know-how to be a great president.
Ted Cruz is the only one now who is able to make the principled changes the country needs - and he has C-H-A-R-A-C-T-E-R.
He makes a small joke of a small issue and it turns out he "pins the blame" on someone.
Perhaps the real point is that most of those who think this is a big deal either haven't read the whole Bible themselves, or haven't remembered all the chapters because 'it's not that important if one gets familiar with some of the specifics to understand the overall point".When one side or the other does this sort of crap, they make their guy look pathetic by association. I resent that because I've donated substantial funds to the Cruz campaign and I don't want nutcases demeaning his stature.....
That still doesn’t answer the question of why you didn’t support Cruz out of the gate - or after Walker imploded. I think that’s important to factor in when people read your constant attacks on Trump. What did you know about Cruz that made you support another candidate who was not from Texas?
I find it hard to believe that he’s never prayed for forgiveness. That just seems very odd for a Christian. Never said the Lord’s Prayer? Never been part of a prayer led by the minister that asks for forgiveness? I take him at his word that he sometimes attends church, but what’s he doing while he’s there? Counting the ceiling tiles?
Trump always has a fall guy. Nothing is ever his fault. That reminds me of someone...hmmm.
The 2 was amateur and did reveal that he hasn’t yet taken the Word of God seriously but this blaming someone else forces me to ask if he has ever taken responsibility for any of his failures?
Is there always an excuse or someone out to get him? Is he a con man? is he a sociopath? I was married to one so I want to know before November.
Yes, I have heard that mentioned. And I know he calls himself a Presbyterian, and some here have taken him to task for not being the “right kind” of Presbyterian, since he belongs to the liberal denomination. But I know for a fact that there are devout and orthodox Christians and congregations in the liberal Presbyterian Church that are unfairly judged because of the policies of their denomination. The same with the United Methodists. Maybe they should leave those denominations, but that is sometimes easier said than done.
Now, I will say that Trump is not particularly theologically-sophisticated in how he talks about his faith. He has been taken to task about saying he hasn’t felt the need for forgiveness. But then he walks that back and says something like he tries to fix things and move on. That sounds to me kind of like repentence. And when he links drinking “his little cup of wine and having his cracker” to forgiveness—that may be a hamfisted way of putting it, but isn’t that true? Donald Trump the politician might need to run the religious gauntlet to appeal to certain voters. Trump the mega-businessman does not. Whatever churchgoing he did occurred long before he became a candidate, and I don’t see why he would need to do it unless he took it seriously and got something out of it. He certainly did not need it to shore up his public image.
Trump does the same thing Obama does - always blame someone else if he gets caught in error. It’s very unbecoming. We’ve had 7 years of that crap with Obama. We don’t need 4 more of it with Trump. He’s as big a narcissist as Obama.
It is a very tiny issue, although I find his refusal to take responsibility for anything troubling.
I mispronounce words that I am not familiar with all the time.
Obviously Trump wanted impress by citing something he knew nothing about.
When I make a mistake in a speech, or anything else, I take responsibility for it. Trump looks for someone else to take responsibility for it, as does Obama.
Precisely... HE KEEPS bringing the gaffe up...
I’m not looking for a Minister-In-Chief. But Trump understands the Judeo-Christian culture of America and he has a common-sense trepidation about evil “religions” invading and taking over the country. I believe he will build a wall and he will crack down on illegal immigration - particularly from the Mideast. And as a New Yorker, I know that he has a very strict no-nonsense attitude towards crime. Anybody who remembers the Central Park Jogger case knows how he stood up for her and went after the thugs who were making the city a misery in the 80s and 90s.
In a nutshell, that’s why I support him. And “2” or “second” has got to be the stupidest reason to not vote for him.
The more he focuses on this the deeper he is showing his true colors.
OF COURSE Tony wrote out 2 Corinthians... that is the way Second Corinthians IS REFERRED to .... duh....keep talking Donald....
