Republican primary front-runner Donald Trump late Wednesday pinned blame for his scriptural gaffe - saying "Two Corinthians" instead of "Second Corinthians" - on evangelical activist Tony Perkins.
"Tony Perkins wrote that out for me - he actually wrote out the 2, he wrote out the number 2 Corinthians," Trump said on "CNN Tonight with Don Lemon." "I took exactly what Tony said, and I said, 'Well, Tony has to know better than anybody.'"
The slip-up drew laughs from the crowd at evangelical Liberty University and has called into question the religiosity of the billionaire businessman.
But Trump said he has since heard from "a lot of people" who tell him that he was actually correct.
"It's a very small deal, but a lot of people in different sections of the world say 'two,' and I've had many, many people say to me," he said.
"My mother, as you know, was from Scotland, and they say two," he added.
When you characterize Trump’s inability to just drop it (or laugh at himself) and a need to blame someone else for a ribbing he’s been getting, you don’t make him look any better. In fact you make him look like he needs someone to make excuses for his childish behavior.
I suppose Trump realized (rightly) that this close to the caucus he couldn’t call evangelicals in Iowa “stupid” for daring to criticize his Corinthians reference - like he did the entire voter base earlier when he felt his poll numbers were too low - so Perkins went under the bus.

What faith? Faith in himself? That I’ll believe. But there is no indication he is a Christian. If you haven’t asked God to forgive you, and if you do not find the need to ask regularly, then you have not accepted God’s evaluation of you:

We are not voting for a pastor, and I doubt a lot of our Presidents have been Christians, but I’d rather a candidate not pretend to be a Christian. What bothers me about Trump is that he panders and pretends.
God can use non-believers to accomplish his will. But that doesn’t mean we need to pretend they ARE believers.
But Trump is no different then 80% of Americans who call themselves Christian.
It isn’t what he said, it’s that he must find someone else to blame.
It’s funny seeing all the religious people on the thread get worked up about this. I don’t think the current president can even tell you if Corinthians is in the Old or New Testament. Nor either of the contenders on the Democrat side. Yet they want to disqualify one of our own over it. It’s such a silly issue but I say let them spend the next few weeks arguing about it because I guess it keeps them out of trouble. Idle hands are the devil’s workshop. I say give them something to occupy themselves with. This seems to fit the bill nicely.
Whether he said two or second is a non-issue. What is an issue is his seeming inability to admit error and the need to blame someone else.
I don’t agree with the “complete phony”....but it does show a lack of character to blame your mistake on someone else. Trump shoulda just shut up and taken the heat.
Perkins probably used a shorthand, assuming that if Trump is the Bible literate he claims to be he would know it’s called 2nd.
But it’s been a long primary campaign with plenty of opportunities to make mistakes. Unlike Hillary’s traitorous and criminal situation.

This all may be small potato/potatoes BUT it does show Trumps true side....."it is never his fault"..., it never will be his fault and he will FIRE good staff people just as Hellary did with the travel office.

I have to say that I am not comfortable with a person’s religious beliefs being such a big topic of discussion in a political campaign. Maybe in the past we just took for granted that our presidents would be generally accepting of our common Judaeo-Christian American values. Most of them were, and we were content to let the particularies of what they believed as individuals be their own business. So when did that change? I think the change came from two sources. One is the increasing secularization of society. Another is, in reaction to that, the rise of the Religious Right. They have every right to do that, and I share many of their views, but a side effect of that movement has been this microscopic examination of the dogmas a candidate might hold. For me, that just sends the whole process off into the weeds. That has led many candidates, panderers all, to pander on religious issues as well. As you correctly point out, that leads to a particularly dangerous form of phoniness.
I am Eastern Orthodox. During our Liturgy, the priest prays for the civil authorties, that they might maintain order so that we might live our lives in peace. The priest does not pray that we might have civil authorities who are Christians. That would be a bonus, of course, but it is also a recognition of the fact that not all our civil authorities will be Christians. I’m good with that.
I have no problem with voting for someone who is not a Christian. The majority of bosses I’ve worked for have been non-Christians, and it wasn’t a problem. I’m content with anyone who is willing to support the free exercise of religious belief - and exercise does not mean “can discuss inside a church”.
There are things I dislike about Trump, but his religious beliefs aren’t an issue to me. Carter was a vocal Baptist at one time, and he was a disaster!

I agree with you. I am Eastern Orthodox. If I wanted to strictly apply my faith to evaluate the candidates, I could write off all of them —all of them — as heretics, apostates, or schismatics. But I won’t do that. I prefer to judge them by what they are likely to do to help the country, and let God judge what is His business to judge.

I could go on and on with some of Hellary's lame excuses, but perhaps Trump will use many of the same now that he has exposed himself.
For being the smartest man (his claim), and he has to ask the audience "Is that the verse you like?", then mess it up.
Trump says he's Smart, and the smartest women in the world is Hellary...Ego/Pride is such an ugly thing.
Something is just wrong with the Trump movement, not the massive supporters themselves, but with Trump himself leading them blindly as did Obama....I don't fault the supporters as they/we all want a real Change. Heaven help us.
