Trump Plays the Traditional Iowa Game

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Trump accepting an endorsement somewhat puzzled me. I just have to be honest. I look at Trump as a genuine outsider, as somebody who doesn't do anything by the book in politics. And yesterday he did two things by the book that, frankly, surprised me. One is accepting an endorsement. I did not see Sarah's speech, but I saw sound bites of it. And I saw Trump standing aside while she was at the podium, and he's not the kind of guy that stands aside. He just isn't. He's that dominant. He is that huge to give up the podium even to somebody endorsing him, sponsoring him. I'm not criticizing it. Don't anybody misunderstand. I'm just telling you what I think here. Do with it what you want.

The second thing that happened yesterday that really, really surprised me -- again, given Trump is rewriting the manual on how to be an outsider and how to avoid all of the traps that you get into if you're gonna play the game of politics the way the insiders play it, I was shocked to see him go all in on the ethanol subsidy. I mean, that reeks of political insiderism.

On the other hand, I understand it's the Hawkeye Cauci. It's the first in this whole series of caucuses and primaries, and he's nip and tuck there with Cruz and wants to win it, and this is what you have to do. But see, that's the point. This is how insiders look at it. You have to go buy votes. And that's what supporting king corn in Iowa is all about.

Cruz, for his part, got into a little bit of trouble because they misreported that he also was on board but he said, "No, no, no, no, I want to phase it out in five years. I want to get rid of it. We can't get rid of it overnight, but I want to get rid of it." So both candidates are on board for the ethanol subsidy. Cruz, for his part, supports publicly letting it fade away in five years.

That is so bizarre that Rush thinks Trump is incapable of stepping aside and letting Palin speak. He has delegated his whole life. That is what a leader does. I guess that is the difference between a leader and a talker. I like Rush but he is all talk.

Well it’s simple. You have to use a little crony capitalism here and there to stop the really big crony capitalism elsewhere. That’s the claim anyway... You know, the ends justify the means...

And yet we’re told that the guy who won’t do the little things right will do the big things right...

Wow.

It’s nice to have a few candidates that actually seem to want to win again.

If you watched Trump during the time that Palin was talking, he was agreeing with everything she said, he knows there are some things he can’t say, but she can, and he let her loose...

This shows a lot of respect for not only her, but for women, if you remember when Diamond and Silk came on stage, both times, he did the same thing, it’s respecting women and the right to say what they have to say...

Even his own daughter has his utmost respect by him standing away while she speaks...

The man is a genius, and Rush needs to shut up and go back to what he does best, talk about Apple phones...

Well I just have my doubts about Trump. That is why I can not vote for him on March 1, in the Tennessee primary

I am becoming convinced that Donald Trump is apolitical. That is, he is uninterested about the separation between Republican and Democrat sensibilities. As such, he does not see the political landscape in the same way that you and I may nor is he particularly interested in the distinction. While I believe that he is capable of seeing a path that is generally conservative, his interests are more about moving the pile forward, regardless of its trajectory or landing point. He is a problem solver with a gigantic ego for self-promotion. Even at that, he is worlds better than the Democrat alternative. He is far from my first choice, but miles ahead of the Democrat alternative.

I have never voted for a democrat, and never would. One thing Trump is not, is a conservative.

please re-read my post. I agree that Trump is not a conservative. Cruz is my choice. And I have spent weeks and months insisting to my friends that Trump is competing in the wrong primary. But I maintain that The Donald is far less interested in the difference between left and right than he is in moving the conversation forward in a generally conservative trajectory. My greatest fear about Trump is who he might nominate to fill SCOTUS vacancies.

We elected a bucketful of “conservatives” in 2012 & 2014, what did it get us? I really don’t care how Trump is labeled, as long as he gets the job done.
