“I hadn’t noticed that part (said inches, not feet, BTW), but the tides affect every part of the ocean, not just near shore. Really idiotic journalist.”

I really do not think you understand the force of the ocean...

A 4” rise (or drop) of the ocean floor covering a few hundred square miles is a tremendous, potential, force. These buoys are firmly attached to the ocean floor. Waves crash upon them all day and night. Tides are different than waves and easily accounted for. A 100’ tidal wave would register on a buoy as a 4” to 6” ‘long pulse’ that would only turn into a wave when it neared the shore and the depth of the ocean, relatively, decreased.

I escaped a rogue wave one evening because I was: 1) aware, 2) young, fit and capable of running fast and 3) lucky enough to find a HUGE driftwood log to jump onto.

The two ladies south of me in their coats taking a stroll after a movie were not so lucky...

Next session: undertow.

I really think I do understand the force of the ocean. I also understand tides, and (as you apparently do not) that so-called “tidal waves” have nothing to do with tides, nor are they the same as rogue waves.

"Run Forest, run!"

Seriously though, who hasn't been to the beach, in the water, and caught by a wave that surprised the heck out of you with it's weight and strength. I've had my feet knocked out from under me by 2 foot waves. Throw in the receding/opposing water coming back from the shore, and sand washing out from under your feet...you've got some power there. I'd just as soon not be on the beach when a tsunami comes rolling in.

IF you go read the article at the link supplied by MUDCAT, then this would be settled.

"Laurel McCoy, a meterologist with the National Weather Service, said the agency looked at the data for the buoy mentioned in the story, which is located west of Astoria. The data showed "the natural fluctuation" of the ocean's tides, and is nothing out of the ordinary, she said.

"There's really nothing to worry about," McCoy said. "We're not seeing any sort of indication that anything is happening with Cascadia."

McCoy said the article had referenced a small clip of data about the water column, but a longer time span shows the how the water height increases and drops over time as expected.

------------------------------------

So, it seems this was just a case of someone panicking after reading only part of the data, and trying to use scare tactics to make money.
