One of the United States' most influential evangelical leaders blasted Liberty University President Jerry Falwell, Jr. on Monday for hosting Donald Trump to give a campaign speech.
Russell Moore, who heads the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, the public policy arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, let fly a series of tweets after Falwell gave a glowing introduction to Trump, calling him "one of the greatest visionaries of our time" and saying Trump "lives a life of helping others ... as Jesus taught in the New Testament."
Moore appeared incredulous at Falwell's language, which was more effusive than he had been with any other candidate, including Texas Sen. Ted Cruz:
Wow. That video is unbelievable. What is the back story?
If they can host Bernie Sanders, why should anyone object to them hosting Trump? Even though it’s Liberty University, both Trump and Bernie are running for President, not for Preacher.
Look, I’m a Trump supporter, but hey, what are the definitive issues here? Cruz and Co. working on setting up a campaign ad? Certainly not for “trustworthiness”. Maybe lack of spontaneity. But we must look elsewhere for trustworthiness.
What matters, as it did eight years ago with a guy with a weird name, Barack Obama, is his voting record in the Senate. There seems to be some question about how Cruz voted in some of these key issues. THOSE are the most important things when it comes to trustworthiness - his Senate record.
It actually reminds me of Obama. So many act so surprised about what Obama did after he was President. But Obama’s public record of consistently voting in the Senate to the left of Socialist Party Caucus member, Senator Bernie Sanders, was available for all to see. What Obama did as President should have been totally expected based on his Senate record.
If we are going to stand for something, let’s stand for the right thing and if we are going to question a candidate’s trustworthiness, let’s use actual factual records, not personal preference, as the standard. Else we make ourselves look foolish and give the opposition ammunition against us and who/what we’re standing for.
Joe said on MJ this morning, “IF IT WERE ANY OTHER CANDIDATE BUT TRUMP, THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA WOULD HAVE ALREADY CALLED THIS RACE,...OVER!”
“Look, I’m a Trump supporter, but hey, what are the definitive issues here? Cruz and Co. working on setting up a campaign ad”?

You missed the point. How in tarnation is it possible Cruz or his team could allow this to be leaked or actually would release it themselves?

If folks have not see this, they ought to watch this.
It’s only 3 minutes featuring Mr. Cruz himself.
Cruz trustworthy?

Doesn’t hit the mark as far as trustworthiness goes IMO. Maybe spontaneity, disorganized campaign, or bad publicity judgement, who knows and actually, who cares? It actually confirms to me his lack of genuine, spontaneous communication to the average Joe.
But issues with his Senate record if there are any - that speaks to trustworthiness.
Was this Cruz commercial conducted in his private residence? It sure appeared to be.
I just can’t believe Cruz or his team allowed this Video to be leaked or actually released it themselves.
Stupid? Yes. Clear evidence of “trustworthiness”? No.
I don't find either Trump or Cruz trustworthy on one of their signature issues: immigration. Cruz has talked about increasing quotas for legal immigrants in the past and has talked out of both sides of his mouth on the issue of whether illegals should be given a path to legal residency (though as far as I know he's always opposed a path to citizenship). Trump talks tough and says all of the right things now, but 4 years ago he was attacking Mitt Romney for making the "self-deportation" remarks, accusing him of "alienating Hispanic Republicans" with rhetoric that could have come from Jeb Bush's mouth (and back in 2000, he wanted to run as a Reform Party candidate in order to stop the "xenophobic" Pat Buchanan).
So the bottom line is that I find neither of them trustworthy. However, I find Rubio, Jeb, etc. even less trustworthy, so I would happily settle for either Cruz or Trump if that means blocking the establishment candidates. With Trump or Cruz, the right things may or may not get done. With Jeb, Rubio, etc. I know for a fact that they won't be on my side.
By the way Jim, would you trust someone who would allow this unedited video to be released?
I knew Jerry Falwell Sr. personally. I know what he expected out of Christians getting involved in the political process. Trump has some things Falwell would have liked. Jerry was big on winning. But he was also a godly man. I really don’t believe he would be comfortable with Trump. He built a whole law school to push back against anti-constitutional decisions like Kelo and Obergfell. Trump loves Kelo and has rolled over and accepted Oberfell as the final word on gay marriage. So Jerry would have said some nice things about Trump, but Trump would probably not have been his first pick. He spent his life fighting the true fight for conservative principles. I just don’t see why he would have gone back on that. But who knows.

At the convocation yesterday, his son has a much better opinion of Trump than you do.
I’ll go with his.
I just don’t see that as a “trust” issue - more of a stupid issue. Again, “trust” regarding a politician is he does what he promises and if there’s a record we look at it.
It’s clearly both.
Yes, well, to each his own. Trump is not a movement conservative and I doubt he will produce the exciting results pro-Trump conservatives are expecting. Especially when he’s promoted a pro-abortion hack for a Supreme Court justice. Jerry Jr. may not know Trump like we do here at FR. The admin there on more than one occasion came up a little short on being fully aware of their surroundings. Just sayin’ ...
Peace,
SR
