Beloved detective Nancy Drew is returning to TV - but she'll look different from how fans remember. American network CBS is pledging that the new Nancy Drew won't be white.

At the Television Critics Association press previews last week, the head of the CBS entertainment division, Glenn Geller, told reporters his network wanted to focus on diversity, including shows designed around characters who were black and Latino.

"We're not casting colour-blind, we're casting colour-conscious," he said.

Lucy Liu is American. Born in Queens. And damn fine looking for 47.

At least they kept Holmes white and British.

I’m waiting for the all-black version of Gilligan’s Island. And the Beverly Hillbillies, and throw in Petticoat Junction.

How about The Beatles? Now there’s an example of pure white discrimination.

Finally, I want an all-black version of Michael Jackson.

There is a reboot of “One Day at a Time” at Netflix with diverse characters except white so not diverse but racist.
Norman Lear: ‘We’re talking about doing a Latino version of One Day at a Time, not in Spanish, but in English.

Why yes, yes it is. So by their own definition, it’s racist and wrong.

Well, they would, except they would have to have come up with something original, so that plan is obviously out the door. It’s so much easier on them this way, plus they get to crow about being current or something else self-righteous.

Sambo was from India. Tigers don’t live in the wild in Africa.

The story itself was not racist and the only pejorative word in the title is that some believe “Sambo” is an insult. That or Black is an insult. Or pairing Black with Sambo is an insult. Or that Black Sambo is redundant. It’s dumb.

And somehow it is more racially sensitive to lighten his skin. Portrayals of black people with darker skin are offensive?

Are the illustrations “pickaninny”? Not in the traditional sense (like the small black girl in the centaur scene in Fantasia, but there were also noble black centaur figure designs).

My biggest problem with this is that I originally read my Mom's old Nancy Drews, and they were the 1930s version. A Black Nancy Drew wouldn't really work in the 1930s without a LOT of changes. And I can't really get my mind around a Nancy in 2016....sigh

"Instead of co-opting white fictional characters and re-writing them as black characters as a sop to the politically correct, why not create original black fictional characters that can be established in popular culture in their own right?"

I loved the old I, Robot stories by Asimov. In his books, there was a detective named Elijah Bailey. In the movie of the same title, a completely different character was created for Will Smith to play. They kept the red haired Susan Calvin character, although in the books she was described as "plain", and of course in the movie she was hollywood good looking. I loved the movie.
