People say they paid $35,000 for next to nothing.
Do you remember Trump University? Probably not â it didnât really catch on.
And one big reason it didnât catch on is because it was a total scam, say a slew of former students in complaints that were filed to the Federal Trade Commission and were recently unearthed by a Freedom of Information Act recently requested by Gizmodo.
âFor my $35,000+ all I got was books that I could have gotten from the library that could guide me better then Trumpâs class did. I just want my $35,000+ money back. I feel embarrass[ed],â reads one complaint.
Another grievance describes a level-unlocking strategy reminiscent of Scientology. After paying $1,495 for a three-day seminar, which provided information freely available on Zillow, âattendees were told that unless they purchased additional products (software; individual coaching) they would not succeed,â the complaint states.
Another former âstudent,â who purchased the $34,995 âGold Eliteâ package after the $1,495 seminar under the promise of mentorship, calls the program âan absolute, utter waste.â
It is not only former students who have called into question the legitimacy of Trump University, which was founded in 2005. The New York Department of Education sent Trump a letter in 2010, accusing the operation of misleading students and misuse of the word âuniversity.â Soon thereafter, the operation was renamed the Trump Entrepreneur Initiative.
In 2013, the New York Attorney Generalâs office filed a $40 million lawsuit against the former reality star and current Republican presidential candidate for failing to impart the promised real estate education on 5,000 students and subjecting prospective students to high-pressure sales tactics.

Everyday with every new disclosure (or old disclosure in this case) we must find someone else to make wrong so that Donald Trump can be right. Today, we see the most egregious rationalization for the behavior of Donald Trump, we blame the victim.
Trump scammed students? C’mom! It’s Ted Cruz who is the “nasty guy”!

The 11/15 Time article has a lot more information.
Trump and his university, which operated from 2005 through 2010, when it was shut down as the San Diego suits and multiple state attorneys general investigations were beginning, lured approximately 7,000 consumers into paying $1,495 to $34,995 for courses where, as the promotional material put it, Donald Trump's "handpicked instructors" would teach them Trump's "insider success secrets" of how to invest in real estate.- - -Trump "created, funded, implemented and benefited from a scam that cost them... thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars each," the lawyers suing him have argued.
Trump told me recently, in a rare discussion about the details of the case, that he "loves talking about this," because the courses were "fantastic." He has surveys filled out by students, he said, showing a "98% satisfaction rate" that is "better than Harvard's." He is "dying to go to court," he insisted. However, his lawyers so far have thrown five years" of procedural roadblocks in front of a trial.
Trump has testified in a deposition (after promising to sue the lawyers suing him) that he had no direct role in creating the curriculum or hiring the teachers. At least he's a GREAT manager. Right? He did not know, he said, if his "university" conferred degrees. (It didn't.)
And he could not explain what the sales materials were referring to when they touted Trump's "foreclosure system" for flipping distressed properties.
Smoking Troll ; ))
But they are not taking any more students and haven’t since 2010. They had over 10,0000 customers. If if they had 100 complaints, it’s a miniscule amount. Most of these complaints on how to make money programs happen because people don’t want to do the work and have buyer’s remorse.
Lanny Davis, is that you?
If the best the Cruz team has is re-hashed OPPO that weâve all seen before then they are SCREWED.

Bears repeating

>>Actually those losers got more of an education than they realize...they might be a bit more cautious before blindly following anyone...and most learned this lesson at a relatively low cost.<<
That’s right! Think how much they could have lost if they had attempted to do actual real-estate deals. Maybe next they can enroll in a university for stock or commodity speculation. Save some money there too.
“Maybe next they can enroll in a university for stock or commodity speculation. Save some money there too.”
Tell me about, I wish he had one. I’m going to have work past retirement age because I never had that opportunity to enroll (and learn my lessons the easy way).
Sounds like a classic scam to me. I’m sure Trump puts this one in the “success” file... after all, at $35K per “student,” why not?
..umâ¦no, it’s not.
Do you have any thoughts on the merits of bringing the case?
Probably a silly question.
Well there’s also plenty of overpriced leftist run Universities teaching empty-headed sloot as well. Money for nothing but making the leftist Administrators rich.
So you think the Better Business Bureau was conspiring with Cruz back in 2010?

Good point.
“Everyday with every new disclosure (or old disclosure in this case) we must find someone else to make wrong so that Donald Trump can be right”
Can you imagine if all these same disclosures were attributable to Cruz? The usual suspects here at FR would be falling all over themselves to attack him for unconscionable behavior, certainly not making excuses to cover for him. That very thought continues to serve me as a litmus test to filter out the usual expectant hyperbole.
Careful. I think that Hillary has a copyright on the "it's old news" excuse.
Typical Clinton response. “Old news, move on”... Never mind the truth of it...
Trump hasn’t even begun to be vetted by the opposition. The left wants to run against Trump, he’s a target rich environment. They’re just waiting to unload his buying of politicians, back room deals, kickbacks, etc until after he gets the nomination. Buying politicians is illegal and he openly brags about it. And you say “its just the way business is done”... Well it is for those who are willing to break the law and corrupt the political system to further their own personal wealth. Not everyone trades their integrity for more wealth/power.
“Money for nothing but making the leftist Administrators rich.”
Has it occurred to you that this was just another one? After all, Trump only had his conservative epiphany in the last few years... So everyone says... And before that is off limits, its “old news”...
Very Clintonesque...
“I am shocked that this hasnât been dragged out yet. If thereâs any scandal that could stop the Trump Express, itâs this one.”
The media is waiting for the right moment — after he has the nominations to drag out this scandal, his ties to the mob (I can’t see how a major NY/NJ real estate developer and casino owner could NOT have some ties to the mob, so that may not be too big a deal), and whatever else they can find. The stories will come, one after the other. So far though, nothing has stuck to him, so I’m not sure any of these yet to be released scandals will either.
For over forty years, my gut has told me
1) All Democrats (and some Republicans) are pro-abortion;
2) All pro-abortion people are evil.
I have NEVER thought that a pro-abortion person would be “good for the country,” or would “bring us together,” or would “help the country heal.” I have always thought that pro-abortion candidates are wicked, violent, dishonest, murderous people.
My gut has never been wrong. And it never will be wrong.
