Top US, Kremlin officials meet at Russian border for closed Ukraine talks

Moscow (AFP) - Top US and Russian officials met Friday in Russia's westernmost outpost to discuss the Ukraine crisis amid a fresh international drive to bolster a fragile truce in the east of the ex-Soviet country.

US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and top Kremlin aide Vladislav Surkov met near the city of Kaliningrad in Russia's exclave bordering European Union members Lithuania and Poland, a source familiar with the situation told AFP.

"The meeting is closed to the media. The topic is Ukraine," the source said.

The meeting took place in Russia because Surkov is subject to Western sanctions over the Kremlin's role in the Ukraine crisis and is unable to travel to the EU, the source said.

US State Department spokesman John Kirby confirmed the meeting, saying Nuland and Surkov had met to discuss "the need for the full implementation of the Minsk agreements," a package of measures agreed by the leaders of France, Germany, Ukraine and Russia in the Belarusian capital last February.

So Ukraine's American recognized govt is not invited to a meeting about the Ukraine? I guess Obama is selling them down the river the way South Vietnam was. They had no say in those negotiations either.

PS: When someone comes to you for a negotiation - that means they have the upper hand.

If Nuland is doing anything more than serving coffee, I would be very worried.

Appropriate that they decided to meet in Konigsberg, the result of yet another Russian land grab. Obama will probably offer to add Ukraine to the Russian empire in exchange for getting Putin’s paid trolls to lay off him in online forums.

The filthy Germans of WW2 lost it fair and square and are lucky they did not lose more.

Patton should have gone to Moscow. It would have been good to hold the equivalent of the Nuremberg trials in St. Petersburg. As it is, the Russians got off easy despite 70+ years of Bolshevik scumbaggery during which they spread misery all over the world, and helped kill 100K GI's in Korea and Vietnam, not to mention contribute to the deaths of tens of millions of people. Germany had 10% of its population killed off. Russia got off scot-free at the end of the Cold War.

They should have had the meeting in Munich so they could call it The Second Munich Conference.

Stalin’s army would’ve been nuked.

I get the feeling that a many posters here have a deep seated antipathy to the United States. I for one am not waiting for the day that I may welcome my new Russian overlords.

The USA had no extra bombs after they dropped them on Japan.

I can speculate that the scientists making the nukes would have probably revolted if they had to make them to drop on the Soviets and the American people were very pro Soviet back then and there could have been cases where communist members of the American army either refused to follow orders or openly give the bomb up to the Soviets.

So, no - it is a nice idea and I wish we had a time machine but it is fantasy.

Those poor innocent Nazis.

And their accomplices, those poor innocent Soviets of Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact fame, without whose collaboration and active assistance the German invasion of the West could not have begun. Amusingly enough, the Russians were gearing up to attack the Germans, when the Germans launched Operation Barbarossa. Just goes to show you can always trust a Russian to stab you in the back.

Schooling you in history is not being pro Russian or anti-American.

The USA was more socialist friendly back in WW2 and spend years thinking kindly of the USSR and her "Uncle Joe" and the US Army in Europe was in no position to challenge the beast that was the Red Army.

We don't even know if our nuke scientists would have complied with orders to build a bomb to use against the USSR.

Stalin fought the Nazis first in Spain. Then he proposed an alliance with the West against the Nazis and was refused. He took the next best deal and signed a non-aggression pact - which is not an alliance.

PS: Poland joined Germany in invading Czechoslovakia but we don't bring that up in polite company.

PPS: I am playing the world's smallest violin in memory of all those dead Nazis....

We don't know if little pink men from Mars would have prevented their usage. In the real world, there were plenty of emigres in the Manhattan Project like Edward Teller who were furious about Russian atrocities in their homelands. They'd have worked overtime to nuke the Russians into pink mist.

It's all right - you can live in your fantasy world.

The USA could not produce any new nukes for a while - we were 2 and done and in the mean time I don't think any allied army would have fared to well trying to push the scary Red Army from Central Europe to Moscow when Germany could not do it from the shorter Soviet border.

Stalin attempted to convert Spain into a Communist outpost. General Francisco Franco defeated the Russian-back communists with German help. Franco managed to turn back the communist threat, but it's funny how you frame his victory as if it's somehow a bad thing that Spain was prevented from entering Stalin's clutches, during which Russian-backed commies killed almost 7K clergymen.

It's amusing how you frame Russia's assistance to Germany while attacking Poland to be morally equivalent to the West's refusal to join with Russia to pre-emptively attack Germany. That's like saying that a person who helps a murderer kill his victim and takes some of the loot is morally in the same position as someone who stands back from the imbroglio.

Why do you persist in saying things without evidence? 7 additional bombs were scheduled to be produced by the end of 1945:

Groves expected to have another atomic bomb ready for use on 19 August, with three more in September and a further three in October.[287] Two more Fat Man assemblies were readied, and scheduled to leave Kirtland Field for Tinian on 11 and 14 August.[286] At Los Alamos, technicians worked 24 hours straight to cast another plutonium core.[288] Although cast, it still needed to be pressed and coated, which would take until 16 August.[289] It could therefore have been ready for use on 19 August. On 10 August, Truman secretly requested that additional atomic bombs not be dropped on Japan without his express authority.[290] Groves suspended the third core's shipment on his own authority on 13 August.[290]
