Before you start laughing, Lasik surgery was also developed in Russia. Widely debunked as “Soviet quackery” at the time.
Oh yeah, well Obama said at the SOTU he was going to cure cancer before the end of his term.
So that is why Lasik sounds like a Russian word?
I remember seeing a documentary on the guy who invented it...In his clinic there was literally an assembly line of patients and they would go treat them one by one....He was probably the richest man in the Soviet Union...IIRC he tragically died in a plane crash.
Wouldn’t doubt they weaponized it 30 years ago. Might explain the short amount of time to research a vaccine.

Originally the surgery developed in Russia (USSR) involved scarring the cornea with tiny blades (radial keratotomy). Now bursts of laser light are used. That’s the LAS in Lasik and the technique and technology were developed here.
So was a Rabies vaccine for dogs in the 70s. Since the vaccine was with a modified live virus half the dogs died of the post vaccine Rabies. Thanks be to God at least they didn’t shed the virus.

I will probably date myself but I kind of recall seeing that assembly line eye surgery thing on TV when I was a wee lad like in the early 80s - That’s Incredible or some such show.

I remember the same show, Leonard Nimoy hosting. And yes, we’re both that old :-)
It was on 60 Minutes. A child had fallen and cut his eye on some broken glass. However, the child was no longer near sighted in that eye. The doctor was amazed and realized the medical potential of the discovery..
I did not know that.
