It was perhaps the lowest moment in Senator Edward Kennedy's career.
Shortly after President Reagan nominated Judge Robert Bork - a highly distinguished former US Solicitor General and Yale Law professor - to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1987, Kennedy took to the senate floor to attack the conservative Bork as follows:
Robert Bork's America is a land in which women would be forced into back-alley abortions, blacks would sit at segregated lunch counters, rogue police could break down citizens' doors in midnight raids, schoolchildren could not be taught about evolution, writers and artists could be censored at the whim of the Government, and the doors of the Federal courts would be shut on the fingers of millions of citizens.
The attack was as dishonest as it was disgraceful. The first strike in a new technique on the judicial confirmation scene that became known ever afterward as "borking"-spreading smears and lies about the target in question. Yet liberalism having long since begun its descent into the fever swamps, Kennedy's attack was emblematic of the emotionalism and outright dishonesty - not to mention appeals to race -that were already typical of the progressive movement.
Who could ever imagine that similar dishonest and disgraceful sentiments would come from a supposed "conservative" columnist in an attack on, of all people, the decidedly conservative Ted Cruz? Wonder no longer. Over there at - you guessed it - the New York Times, the "conservative" columnist of record, David Brooks, has mounted a Kennedy-style attack on Senator Cruz. Brooks has become a Borker.

Excellent column
David Brooks is a liberal elitist columnist for the leading progressive newspaper. If he was ever a conservative he sold out long ago for his 30 pieces of silver and a byline from the NY Times.
The events of recent years have demonstrated that most members of the elite who call themselves conservatives, give their allegiance first to their social class and second to the global progressive movement. David Brooks, the Bush family, John McCain, John Roberts, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney and most GOP members of Congress are elitists, not conservatives, not Americans, and not patriots. Patriots would not enable Barack Obama and the Democrat party. True American patriots would not remain silent, as both Bush former presidents have done, while a rogue POTUS ignored the Constitution and ruled by decree.
Anyone who questions this strategy, or offers an alternative, is excoriated and shunned by the smart people.
I, and many more, are so angry at the media, the GOP and the left.. with obama in that mix also.. that there is nothing they can say to lower Trump’s or Cruz’s numbers in the polls. Every time they try, the numbers go up. They do not get this YET.. I so dislike the past 7+ years and what they have allowed/protected/promoted... that NOTHING matters but to get someone to UNDO all this mess. The last year may be the worst yet... they plan on leaving in a blaze... and Trump is going to have his hands full... but I bet he gets on it the first day! If it were a GOPer, they’d let it all stand.
The only ones that might be able to take each of them out,.. is each other. Maybe, perhaps.. not even sure about that.
I don't think that point was the lowest point in Ted's career. Seems to me he was underwater for awhile and that is pretty low as well.

Tough to say what he was. Brooks wrote a parody of William F. Buckley and Buckley gave him a job, which led to other jobs. It wasn't hard to be against Jimmy Carter in 1980. A lot of people who were have rejoined the Democrats since then. Just how strong David Brook's convictions might have been -- I'd say not very much.

Ex-presidents are like constitutional monarchs. Whatever influence they have depends on their not trying to use it all the time. If the Bushes were screaming about Obama everyday no one would listen. And considering how popular GWB was after leaving office, it's probably just as well he remains on the sidelines.
FWIW: Brooks was born in Canada to at least one American parent, so maybe we'll be hearing more about his own political ambitions as time goes on.
I’d forgotten that David Brooks was still a republican. HA! Thought he “converted” years ago.
No one takes David Brooks seriously anymore. He is the NYT House Conservative and only writes for the clueless elites in NYC and DC
