A long line of gun fanciers waiting to buy tickets snaked across the Cow Palace parking lot early Saturday morning despite a cold drizzle, as the Crossroads of the West gun show kicked off a two-day run at the famed exhibition hall.
Judging by the size of the morning crowd, show owner Bob Templeton predicted total weekend attendance of about 7,000 -- double the usual 3,500 at the show he's been holding at the Cow Palace for three decades.
"There are a lot of first-time buyers," said Templeton, a Utah resident. "They're here for two reasons -- the safety of their family and President Obama's call for more gun control" earlier in the week.
The sprawling exhibit hall was packed with vendors selling everything from ear plugs and T-shirts to kits that allow you to make your own AR-15 semi-automatics.
An unscientific sampling of attendees failed to find anyone opposed to the background checks at gun shows proposed by the president -- such checks are already California law -- but many said they were suspicious that he is opposed to all gun ownership, despite his insistence that he's not.

OT: "Cow Palace" -- is there a better venue name anywhere in the U.S.? Everybody just says the words without thinking about them. Not "Arena" or "Auditorim." Nope, we have a Cow PALACE! Can you see Bossie on her throne in the Palace?
I would go to the San Jose paper and comment but I was banned for making negative comments about Muslims.
where I live, in flyover..the local gun shows are held at an arena on the grounds of the ‘cattle congress”
it used to be an old stockyard where cow auctions happened, many decades ago.
now, it hosts social events, a county fair, and gun shows, 5-6 times a year.
Our “Cow Palace” beats a “Cattle Congress” any day of the week!
I saw Styx at the Cow Palace in January, 1980. Great show!
Hard to believe it was THIRTY SIX YEARS AGO. I guess I’m getting old.
The Tulsa INTERNATIONAL PETROLEUM EXPOSITION building with THE GOLDEN DRILLER is, I believe, now the biggest gun show in the USA.
But then, I haven’t been to it for several years. No money.
The REPUBLICANS had their convention at the COW PALACE many years ago. I always remember that name.
“The Golden Driller” — pardon me, but that makes me think of a male porn star.
WHAT “executive actions”?
All I’ve seen is much sound & fury signifying nothing.
Our side is so terrified of him “doing something” that we’re not noticing that he hasn’t done anything, instead we continue to fight against what we think he will do.
No, I once saw the Seals play hokey at the cow palace.
I used to go to Seals games at the Oakland Colliseum. It’s been a few years.
Sorry, that should be hockey.
I first heard the name “Cow Palace” during the 1964 campaign. Barry Goldwater was nominated & you know the outcome.
(Some said America just wasn’t ready for three Presidents in one year)
“The Democrats warned me that if I voted for Goldwater there would be race riots and the Vietnam war would escalate. I voted for him and that’s exactly what happened!”
Interesting!!
I thought that some years ago, the San Francisco City leaders banned gun shows & the like from renting the Cow Palace.
7000 people? From all of Northern Cali (State of Jefferson)?
Good Grief....that just seems sad to me.
Well, not ALL of Northern California. The 12 county Combined Statistical Area of San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, CA has only 8.5 million people, so about 0.1% showed up.
Look on the bright side — show attendance doubled compared to the past 30 years.
