Cruz outflanks Trump on immigration
AmericaBlog ^ | Jan. 5 2016 | Jon Green

Trump’s mass deportation plan, which he has likened to Dwight Eisenhower’s “Operation Wetback” (not making that name up), involves rounding up undocumented immigrants and their family members — including US-born citizens — and then allowing them to apply for the opportunity to come back through the big, beautiful door that Trump has promised to put in his big, beautiful wall. You know, the one that Mexico is going to pay for.

This immigration platform is as cruel as it is unworkable, and has been held up throughout the campaign for the Republican nomination as the gold standard for anti-Latino policy proposals. However, Trump has responded to the criticism that his plan is racist and cruel by pointing out that giving “people who are really good and outstanding and have had outstanding records” the opportunity to reenter the United State legally — after they’ve been forcibly removed, of course. In short, Trump claims that his plan isn’t actually so harsh because at least he gives immigrants the chance to come back.

That part of Trump’s plan isn’t new. The policy is called “touchback,” and it was first proposed in 2007 by former Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R – TX). At the time, immigration hardliners hated the proposal, describing it as basically no different from amnesty. Now, Ted Cruz is betting that he can make a similar argument and use the touchback provision in Trump’s plan to frame him as an immigration squish. He might not be wrong.

Trump supports touchback amnesty. What's the point of deporting 30 million if you let 28 million right back in?

What is the point of calling it amnesty, if 28 million are deported, and only 100,000 are let back in?

You could stress test the efficacy of The Wall. And make the Mexicans pay for it.

At least he deports them and lets them have the opportunity to come back in legally, at the end of the line, and not if their criminals.

Well, you know Trump is a nice guy...as when he said “People lack health insurance? I’ll make sure that everybody has good health care (by ‘I’ll make sure’ Trump meant you and I as taxpayers will pay for it)”. And he would be such a nice guy that I’m sure 95% of everyone actually deported he would say is good and the Donald would make them legal. And he is such a nice guy, I’m sure he’d begin to grant exceptions to deportations for “good” people.

I trust Trump as far as I can throw him...and that is several feet at max. Then my trust runs out.

Cruz also said he wasn’t going to have big deportation roundup.

Trump: "I Want a 'Big, Fat, Beautiful, Open Door"

Why would you want law breakers to be rewarded by letting them back in and be at the front of the line?
Cruz will deport and not let them back in to the front of the line.

“This immigration platform is as cruel as,,,,”

What is cruel about it? Explain it so Kate Steinle could understand.

“This immigration platform is as cruel as,,,,”

Is that a Trump quote? I remember him saying that about Romney's self-deportation plan.

“Cruz will deport and not let them back..”

Sure he will. lol
Just yesterday he was saying that he wouldn’t do anything other than normal law enforcement. I don’t think he’s serious about deporting, or a wall.

That’s is not what he was saying just yesterday. He has explained his plan fully and in detail.

The first step is building a wall and enforcing the border. He has plans for that. As he says, no point in deporting if it’s still a revolving door.

Then he would implement laws already on the books but not currently enforced. This would involve a secure system for checking for people who overstay visas.

He would enforce the requirement that employers vet prospective employees so that illegal aliens could not be hired.

There were other points and it was a well thought out, workable plan.

Here's a direct quote for you to chew on:

Eric Trump: "My dad's immigration plan includes amnesty"

Seems most people trust what trump says about the wall.I believe he will have it built and Mexico will pay for it.They will be tickled to pay for it.

On this I couldn`t disagree more with Trump. The government is not to be trusted, ever! NO MATTER WHO IS AT THE REINS!

You don`t build the last wall in the New American Gestapo headquarters and trust that organization it`ll NEVER be used against us. Oh yeah, like all the agencies and laws we allow Bush to build and emplace were not used by OBozo for the last 7 years against patriots?

You go after the REAL traitors in this deal, the EMPLOYERS of illegal aliens! Make it financially devastating to employ illegals while taking away ALL freebee benefits and the majority will self deport. No need for The Amerikan Gestapo Agency, which can just as easily be turned against us as well.

(Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me')
