When I became a Conservative at age 29 living in Asia, I returned to the USA, voted for
Reagan, and subscribed immediately to NR & TNR so I would would be armed with
knowing what the statists were plotting, and Buckley's obliteration of their theories.

I have you beat by a wee bit. I became a conservative at age 14, when I stumbled upon National Review in the public library. I grew up in a Boston suburb, which is as far left as you could imagine.
