Trump’s trump card in Iowa? [Pro-ethanol]
The Hill ^ | 01/11/2016 | Devin Henry

Donald Trump is an unabashed backer of federal support for ethanol, a popular issue in Iowa that could provide the GOP front-runner with an effective closing argument against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) ahead of the Feb. 1 caucuses.

Cruz has a narrow lead in polls of Iowa votes, but the race is close, and Trump has vowed to win the Hawkeye State.

"Iowa is important to me," he said in an exclusive interview last week with The Hill.

"It would be a less risky answer not to say that. I could tell you that, 'Well, I hope I do well in Iowa' and that would cover all the bases. I don’t want to say that. I’d love to win Iowa. To me, Iowa is very important."

Ethanol could be the difference maker.

Cruz opposes the federal ethanol mandate, which requires refiners to mix a certain amount of ethanol into their gasoline supply.

Iowa is the leading ethanol-producing state in the nation, and Cruz's plan to phase out the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) has raised angst there, even among his own supporters.

Trump has peppered his Iowa stump speeches with praise for the fuel and hit Cruz for opposing the ethanol mandate.

The Trump campaign considers the issue one that could sway people struggling to decide between two like-minded candidates courting a similar demographic of voter.

"I don’t think we should ever lose track of the fact that national security and the economy and immigration and a lot of these issues are very important, but I would say ethanol plays a tie-breaker role," Sam Clovis, Trump’s national co-chair and senior policy adviser, said.

The best things in America are mandated and subsidized by the Feds. After all America is a ‘rich’ country, we can afford it all.

Can't we elect Trump King??

Ethanol isn’t as popular in Iowa as some think it is. Iowa can’t even pass their own statewide ethanol mandate.

Even the Leftists have abandoned their ethanol brainchild.

Ethanol must die! Trump is wrong.

Embracing corporate welfare is a black mark against Trump. (Ethanol, eminent domain for private benefit)

Ted Cruz is definitely the more conservative here.

They’re ALL going to be Pro-Ethanol.

Cause you can’t win Iowa unless you ARE Pro-Ethanol.

Which is why we need a unified national primary on a single day. Otherwise these small states with narrow special interests are able to dictate terms.

If Vermont were first up we’d be subsidizing Ben and Jerry’s.

I see it as a national security issue. we need to have it as a last resort in case we need an alternative energy source. isay keep it funded at a lower level so that we can have a back up. Just in case.

Keep that corporate welfare coming in!

Trump's Trump card is the same as every other politician in the Iowa caucuses... except for Cruz.

You can trust Trump. He's not like the others.

We’re talking about exporting oil and natural gas. We don’t need to fund ethanol for any reason security or otherwise.

The thing that people have to understand is one simple statement:

“Trump made Trump; Trump is the only one that can take Trump out”...(Rush Limbaugh)

No kidding and anybody that believes China will stand around and pay a 25% import tax as well as Mexico paying to build a wall by far takes the term ‘low information voter’ to the basement level. If these are Trumps sophisticated business principles we will have some serious financial problems. I never heard such fiscal drivel.

He also supports subsidies for wind.

I haven’t checked to see if he’s gotten around to pandering to solar since his trip to Reno.
