When a child pre-deceases his parent, his share of the inheritance is usually split between his children.

I think that is governed by state inheritance laws.

My dad’s will clearly stated that if one of us predeceased him, the will would be split between the remaining children.

That said, we knew this and made a verbal agreement that we’d still cut in the other family.

That's how it was done in our family. But it's not a law or anything.
