This article may be misleading. The Frankfort School Marxists were not the originators of “cultural Marxism”. They were following in the footsteps of Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci.

I think it's hard to say that there was one distinct “founder” of cultural Marxism. The three most influential groups were the Fabian Socialists (late 1800s), Gramsci (circa 1920) and the Frankfurt School. There were differences among them but they all shared the common goal of slowly conquering a society from the inside out
