You're right. The General Secretary cannot be a citizen of any of the Security Council's five permanent members. But as other have noted here, rules can be changed.
And if Obama does get the job, I expect to be applauded for my insight. Because I have predicted this for some time now.
My impression is that the Secretary-General of the U.N. cannot be a citizen of any of the Security Council’s five permanent members. Even if this impression is incorrect, the General Assembly elects the Secretary-General on recommendation of the Security Council and the nomination is therefore subject to veto.
I don’t see China or Russia allowing a U.S. national to be nominated, even one as “sympathetic” to their interests as Obama.
As have a few of us. There are many strange things about this guy. Shall we say - odd clues, perhaps.
He’ll just appoint himself.
