A Kentucky man who had his $1,500 hobbyist drone shot out of the sky last year by an agitated neighbor has filed a federal lawsuit in hope of having the courts define the rights of aircraft operators versus property owners with respect to unmanned aerial vehicles.
Attorneys for the drone owner, David Boggs, filed a complaint for declaratory judgment and damages in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky on Monday, nearly six months after the manâs camera-equipped, remote-controlled aircraft was brought down by a shotgun-wielding neighbor, William Merideth.
Police initially cited Mr. Merideth with charges of criminal mischief and wanton endangerment for admittedly firing three blasts from his shotgun after he spotted the drone above his property last July, but Bullitt County Judge Rebecca Ward later dismissed those charges after concluding there had been an invasion of privacy and that Mr. Merideth was in the right.
Mr. Merideth, who has since dubbed himself the âdrone slayerâ and has marketed T-shirts with that slogan, claimed the drone had been hovering no more than 10 feet above his home when he grabbed for his gun and shot thrice, causing the aircraft to come crashing down.

Yes, but in the next paragraph the drone owner claims it was 200 feet in the air.
And if it was really just 10 feet above his house and it took three shots....
“... when TSHTF one of the most desired pieces of personal high tech will be drones ...”
And an outlet to plug it into. My son got into his drone at Christmas. “What the heck!? It says here the battery provides 6 minutes of flight and video. Then 140 minutes for a full charge again!!??”
He flies that thing over our deck while we are out there having happy hour and we will shoot it down.
I’m just pointing out that regulating drones isn’t necessarily new, since the FAA has regulated the air for decades.
I never said I agreed with it.
Not a problem. Thanks for clarification.
There is some really light and compact solar panels online, campers solar panels that fold up to charge a cellphone, i have one thats a panel and li ion battery, has dual usb outlets, very high capacity. About the size of a very thick cellphone.
Electrical power won’t be such an issue unless an emp weapon had been used, and electrical cannot be killed if you revert to old fashion generators with wind, water or mechanical momentum such as pedal power.
It very much may become a drone wars in the near future unless the market is restricted, killed or controlled.
The use of drones will far exceed what people currently think, the size of them is getting smaller, the range and flight time growing, soon enough will be micro engines able to pull energy right over the air like wireless charging, much like Tesla visioned or like Edger Rice Burroughs wrote about, aircraft that flew by electric motors drawing power by radio waves.
You send a noisy thing over my property, I do what I have to do to protect myself and family.
You're protecting your family...from noisy things?
OK, Rambo.
Article excerpt says the drone was ten feet above his house.
It says the shooter CLAIMED is was ten feet above his house.
Jazz,
You fly your drone over my home to watch me naked in my jacuzzi and i will shoot it down to.
Do it while my wife is doing such and she will shoot you.
How’s it going jazusamo, good New Year?
Good on you, Bang!
Good for you and the wife, Joe. :-)
Good New Year so far, my FRiend, hope it’s the same for you and yours!
What to do if the drone doesn’t fly out of the owner’s property, but has a camera powerful enough to record high quality video of someone else’s yard while hovering 200’ above his own property?
Over at a local park there is a group of guys who buzz people with their small drones. They have cameras attached so I figure their victims are on Youtube with the guys laughing in the background.
Sounds like those turkeys need an attitude adjustment, it’s all fun and games until somebody is hurt.
Then how in the world does the FAA have any say over quadcopters which are typically never flown that high ?
I’m sorry - he took down a drone hovering 200 feet over his house with a shotgun? First, why was it hovering over his house at all, regardless of how high it was? Second, what was the choke on that shotgun? Pretty good shooting, sounds like.
I wonder how hard it would be to make a focused microwave emitter.
Hmmmmmm...
Life is good.
How hard is it to look at your preview before you post and remove/change all the characters that don’t translate?
