Saint Rick is just another in a long line of shady characters who pander to Evangelicals (he was a Roman Catholic!) for purely cynical, political reasons, but had zero appeal beyond the gullible 20 or 30 percent of the voting base. Saint Rick had the "Dangers of Porn" at the top of his Issues page for most of his campaign. That right there tells you why Saint Rick was never going to beat Romney nor win the general.
