5.1 magnitude quake detected close to North Korea nuclear test site

by Agence France-Presse

January 6, 2016

A 5.1 magnitude tremor was detected close to North Korea’s nuclear test site on Wednesday, triggering concerns that Pyongyang had conducted a fresh atomic explosion.

The US Geological Survey said the epicentre of the quake was in the northeast of the country, some 50 kilometres (30 miles) northwest of Kilju city, placing it right next to the Punggye-ri nuclear test site.

10 kilometers is a trial parameter that the earthquake magnitude calculation sticks in for a best fit to the data. Only an approximation.

35-45 kilotons, if it was an H-bomb it was a fizzle.

It’s the same magnitude as the 2012 detonation, maybe a bit smaller.

I doubt it was more than 6-7 kilotons, as it was in the same place, and the same magnitude as the 2013 detonation, which was scaled at 6-7 kilotons.
