A week ago, Donald Trump stood before a massive crowd of some 30,000 people at a rally held in Mobile, Alabama.
There he gave a rousing speech about taking on the political establishment, appealing to the frustration of those present that the political class in Washington, D.C., has failed them.
When the rally ended, the loudspeakers in Ladd-Pebbles Stadium blared out âWeâre Not Gonna Take Itâ by Twisted Sister, to a standing ovation.
Being from California, I watched this rally through the extensive coverage that it received on cable news. And it struck me that once upon a time, back in October of 2003, I too had been at a similar rally, where someone was campaigning to be an elected chief executive, and where âWeâre Not Gonna Take Itâ was the song of the day. In fact, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister was on hand in Sacramento, singing to a massive crowd of activists on the eve of the now-infamous recall election that brought Arnold Schwarzenegger to power as Governor of California.
The similarities to the Schwarzenegger campaign then, and the Trump campaign today, are pretty striking.
For one thing, both campaigns focused on taking on the âpolitical establishmentâ in the Capitol.
Arnoldâs favorite rally prop was a broom that he would hold up high, announcing forcefully (as only the Terminator could), âWe are going to sweep out the special interests!â; âWe are going to blow up the boxes!â; and his favorite rallying call, âWe are going to take the government back!â
The Capitol atmosphere at the time was poisonous, with incumbent Democrat Governor Gray Davis beset by various scandals that had his popularity in the state at a record low.
Schwarzenegger, an actor by profession, mastered the populist rhetoric that would lead to his election.

I’m in CA..This author is FOS.
I’m in Ca. No he’s not.
Smells like desperation in here. Eventually you will come to understand, you are fighting a fools fight. But you are stubborn, I’ll give you that.
More BS from a Trump hater.
Yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.
Arnold Schwarzenegger == George W Bush
Arnold had a better command of the English language but both ‘men’ had a penchant to be bun punched by liberal demoncrats.
If ya think Trump is similar to Schwarzenegger’s campaign, or Schwarzenegger the man, I can’t help ya.
Trump had created jobs. Arnold was a actor.
They played the same song so they are same? Ok. Nuts.
I understand that nothing can be said to change the opinion of someone who came to that opinion illogically.
Trump is an international business tycoon, who knows our laws, other nation's laws, other nation's BIG GUYS, and runs many different international and American businesses.
And Trump is an AMERICAN, born & bred, who LOVES this nation, her traditions, her history, and loves it!
The analogy doesn't hold water.
I don't know of a state the demoncrats will take with Trump at the helm.
To say that Trump’s campaign has similarities to Schwarzenegger’s first campaign does not mean that you a) admire Schwarzenegger or b)dislike Trump. All it it means is that Trump is on track to win in a populist landslide.
Schwarzenegger’s first campaign had exactly ZERO in common with the way he eventually governed.
(... and I’m from CA and I know the author of the Breitbart piece but am for now refraining from ANY commentary on who I prefer in the Presidential primary.)
Trump can’t even win a poll here on FR. He lost to Ted Cruz 52.5% to 47.5%
“And Trump is an AMERICAN, born & bred, who LOVES this nation, her traditions, her history, and loves it! “
Yes, perhaps the poster should analyze why Arnold and Ted are not eligible to POTUS.
Fitting. Beyond words.
ditto
Is Trump like Arnold? I don’t know, all Arnold wanted was to be a kennedy and he certainly got the lying, scamming and cheating part down. I don’t think Trump wants to anybody but himself, why would he? All we can do is wait out the spin of the wheel and see where the ball lands.
The analogy is about successful populist appeals on very similar issues. It’s about the strategy and tactics of the two campaigns. Not background, policy or ideology.
So the analogy holds.
