I don't believe that THEY think that they are a bizarre and repulsive ethnic group. Why would they? They are an old lineage and proud of it. It worked for them.

However, now they are under the glare of worldwide scrutiny and the media reveal what the media want to reveal, that is, what sells the best.

The media wouldn't expound on the good part of their culture. Why would they? Who cares? Folks revel in the bizarre. The fact that they are so old a culture says that SOMEthing worked for them.
There are wealthy folks there, making most of their money from drugs...which they sell to the West.

Those who emigrate will find almost nothing in common with the West save for a vertebral column and brain stem.
